On Thursday, May 1, voters will decide who they want to represent them in the Peterborough City Council elections. Politics reporter JONNY MUIR will speak to all 70 candidates and ask them what they stand for and why they deserve your vote. Today, the spotlight is on Central and East wards.
PICKING a winner in Central ward is like predicting who will secure the Democratic nomination for the US presidential election.

in 2007, Labour's
Cllr Zahid Hussain swept to victory, a year after the Conservatives gained their own thumping victory in the ward.

This time around, Labour's Nazim Khan, a former Central ward councillor, and Conservative Shaukat Ali, are locking horns.

Meanwhile, Green candidate Di Newman will be looking to make further headway after polling 131 votes in Central ward in the 2007 election, and Mohammad Younis – another former Central ward councillor and ex-Tory – will fly the flag for the Liberal Democrats.

The winner will replace incumbent Central ward councillor Abdul Razaq, who was expelled from the Conservative benches after he was charged by police in connection with election fraud.

In East ward, Peterborough City Council's deputy leader Cllr Stephen Goldspink (Conservative) will be challenged by Sally Plummer (Green), Simon Collister (Labour) and Manazar Hussain (Liberal Democrat).
