Environment co-ordinator Nicola Ward (40) said: "We all feel elated, it is absolutely wonderful. We will now continue all of our hard work, especially after winning the award.

"All of our hard work has been recognised with this award and we are all delighted."

Compost monitor Jack Cruise (6) said: "It is really cool winning the award."

Tecla Mushnringe (9) said: "We are really happy about the award."

The pupils spend science lessons in the gardens, looking at the different forms of wildlife, planting and learning about the environmental effect they have.

After a series of workshops concentrated on several themes, including the wonder of wetlands and marvellous minibeasts, the school is currently planning the next period of green activities.

Runners up were Ann Samuel from Leighton Primary School and Audrey Davis from Newark Hill Primary School.
