A SCHOOL secretary has been nominated for one of The Evening Telegraph's Education Awards for caring and listening to children who need a friendly ear.
Debbie Williamson was put up for the Support Staff Award by Newark Hill Primary School headteacher Lorraine Mann.

On nominating the secretary, Mrs Mann said: “Debbie is not only one of our school secretaries presenting a warm welcome to visitors, but also our senior midday supervisor.

“She leads a team of 10 dinner ladies, making dinner time at this school a very positive experience.”

Mrs Mann said that Mrs Williamson makes sure that the children are happy in the playground, cares for them when they fall over and listens to them when they need a friendly ear.

The headteacher added: “I have been impressed by the outstanding care she gives the children and the way she leads her team to ensure that lunchtime is a great time for children.”

Mrs Williamson (46), who has worked at the school in Eastfield Road, Peterborough, for the past four years, said she was quite surprised to learn about the award nomination, but also pleased.

She said: “I think Mrs Mann nominated me because of how well our whole team plays with the children during lunchtimes.”

Mrs Williamson said she also offers an ear for the youngsters who have often have a lot of worries.

She added: “I talk to the children and help them sort out any problems they may have.”

As she also works in reception, Mrs Williamson said she likes being able to meet the children in the morning, then see them at lunchtime and as they are going home.

She added that she gets a lot of job satisfaction, especially when the children come up to her in the town and say hello.

She added: “I still really love my job and have recently become involved with the gardening club, which teaches the children about their surroundings, recycling and composting.

“However, none of this would have been possible without the support of my team of dinner ladies.”

Mrs Williamson could now be a finalist in the Education Awards 2007, with the presentation ceremony being held at the Key Theatre, in Embankment Road, Peterborough, on Monday, July 16.

The closing date for entries is Monday.
