A TALENTED teenager has been nominated for one of The Evening Telegraph's Education Awards.
Raymond Li who attends Deacon’s School, in Queens Gardens, has been put up for the Best Pupil Aged 11 to 16 by his proud uncle.

Wai Hong Li, from Kilverstone, in Werrington, believes his nephew should have the award because of his “incredible talent”.

Mr Li said: “I have seen him studying hard and he also helps out in the family Chinese takeaway business in Hampton by working on Fridays and Saturdays as a part-time job.”

The 15-year-old is always busy out of school, and on a Sunday he attends Chinese GCSE classes where he received an A* in recognition of his hard work. The youngster has also taken six of his GCSE subjects early, which means he has an extra year to start his AS Levels.

Mr Li said: “When he was 11, Ray became a member of the National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youths, and he still is today.

“During the summer holidays you would think he would be lying around, but one year he went to summer school at the Imperial College in London to study maths and last year he went to Lancaster University to study history.”

Mr Li said that at school he displays many other talents including representing the school rugby, athletics, hockey, basketball and badminton teams.

On finding out he had been nominated, Raymond was completely shocked. He said: “I never expected this, it is a huge surprise but it is nice to be recognised for my hard work.”

Raymond said he plans to finish his GCSEs before going on to do A-Levels and then university.

The teenager could now be a finalist in the Education Awards 2007, with the presentation ceremony being held at the Key Theatre, in Embankment Road, Peterborough, on Monday, July 16.
