Company Car Man is a light-hearted ET Business feature where we ask a company car driver in the Peterborough area to answer a number of questions on topics of the moment.
This week we feature chief executive of the Peterborough Environment City Trust Hugh Cripps, who rides a Trek 3700 bicycle.Q. Are soaring petrol prices good news for the environment as more motorists are likely to drive less or is the impact on the economy too big a cost to pay?
A. Increasing fuel prices certainly hit our pockets in a very immediate way but some- one, somehow, sometime will have to pay and not only for the cost of the fuel but also for the cost of the damage to the environment.
And using the "polluter pays" principle it should be the car or lorry owner. I am, how- ever, sorry for those on low incomes and for people with mobility impairment for whom a car is essential – some help should be given there.
Overall then, increasing fuel prices will mean we all drive less and purchase more economical cars so that has to be good for both the environment and for the economy.
If people want to know how to drive more efficiently then call the Energy Saving Trust on 0800 512012.
Q. Peterborough's aspiration to be the UK's Environment Capital is laudable but are you confident the city knows what it takes to secure the title?
A. Yes, Peterborough Environment City Trust and all the other organisations in the Environment Capital Partnership have set out our stall in the form of the Environment Capital Manifesto on how we believe we can secure the title, however I believe that this will need to change over the coming months and years to keep us ahead of the competition
Q. Peterborough United's boss Darren Ferguson has been linked to the vacancy at Leicester City. Should he stick with Posh or, if given the opportunity, leave for a city that can at least boast of a Premiership stadium?
A. I think loyalty to a team and club is unfortunately becoming a thing of the past. I was pleased to see the reception the crowd gave Ryan Giggs when he came on in the final the other week for his record breaking number of appearances for Man Utd.
However, as a lifelong QPR supporter, I really don't care what Darren does
Q. It seems a dog is leading the field of talented performers in the UK according to
ITV's Britain's Got Talent Show. Do you agree with the judges or is the whole show just so ruff you don't bother to watch it?
A. I think 99.9 per cent of TV is totally barking mad and has gone completely to the dogs and I don't watch Britain's Got Talent or any other show with Simon Cowell; however – a talented dog! Now I might watch.
