10 YEARS AGO: FOOTBALL: Posh struck the woodwork four times in a 1-1 Second Division home draw with Swindon. Jimmy Bullard equalised for Posh late in the game as goalkeeper Bart Griemink enjoyed a brilliant game for the visitors.

RUGBY UNION: Westwood beat Borough 2nds 11-5 to deliver a Hunts & Peterborough County Cup shock. Oz Merrygold had scored a try for Borough in the first minute, but Chris Jones scored all 11 of Westwood’s points.

SNOOKER: Gavin Cork’s break of 66 helped Childers to a 3-2 win over New England A in Peterborough League Division One. Paul Hefford and Ian Lea were Childers’ other winners.

HOCKEY: Wisbech Grammar School pupils Mark Wadsley and Gemma Darrington were selected for England Under 16 squads.

FOOTBALL: Tuncay Korkmaz and an own goal enabled Wisbech to beat Banbury 2-0 in the Dr Marten’s League to give Ian Benjamin a winning start to his managerial career at Fenland Park.

ATHLETICS: Walton schoolboys Ashley Allen in the senior boys race and Chris Knights in the intermediate boys event were winners at the Cambs County School Cross Country Championships in Cambridge.

BOXING: Local cousins Michael Maguire (12) and Bobby Maguire (16) won through to the Midlands Finals of the National Schoolboy Championships with easy wins in their qualifying bouts.

20 YEARS AGO

BOXING: Shaun Coulson was the only winner from six Focus fighters at a dinner show in L’Aristos nightclub. Coulson stopped hot favourite Michael Bell from Norwich inside two rounds.

FOOTBALL: Newborough beat arch rivals Thorpe Wood 1-0 in an outstanding under 12 League Cup tie thanks to a Darren Wilburn goal.

Newborough: Stephen Williams, Ian Williamson, Scott Ward, Matthew Heaton, Jamie Barfoot, John Leftley, Wilburn, Neil Smith, Andrew Fitzgibbon, Daniel French, Stewart French, Trevor Ware.

Thorpe Wood: Kevin Swann, Gary Ward, Paul Oxbury, Simon Barrick, Richard McPartlin, Alex Dunman, Lester Parker, Jamie Weston, Thomas Stones, Ben Harris, Dean Hayman, Gareth Binns, Simon Westcott, Michael Simpson, Steven Batchelor.

POOL: Baston-based Mark Gray (18) led Cambs to two national titles in Derby. Gray won the decisive frame as Cambs beat Wiltshire 5-4 in the final of the senior men’s event and he won three of his four frames as Cambs beat Devon 5-2 in the Under 19 Final.

ICE HOCKEY: Pirates snapped a five-game losing streak at the East of England rink by beating Humberside 6-4 in the Heineken Premier Division. Carl Stripling claimed a hat-trick for Pirates with Darren Durdle, Andy Heinze and Scott Harlow also scoring.

HOCKEY: Alison Jeffels, Ruth Swann, Jo Davy and Vicki Sandall scored the goals as Peterborough Town Ladies beat St Ives 4-3 in East Super League Division Two.

30 YEARS AGO

SQUASH: Mike Leonard and 13 year-old daughter Sharon from Peterborough Town were beaten by St Albans pair Samir and Nadia Nadeem in the in the regional final of the Debenham Family Championships in Flitwick.

DARTS: Dennis Harbour, Tracy Harbour and George Newson from Division Six side Mitchells were the shock qualifiers for the semi-finals of the Peterborough Clubs League Perkins Shield Triples semi-finals.

ATHLETICS: As usual Deepings School dominated the District Cross-Country Championships, but their top runners Noel Liverton and Richard Gardener were surprisingly beaten to individual gold in the junior boys event at Bretton Park by Bushfield pupil Cavan Chapman.

FOOTBALL: Dave Syrett scored against his former club as Posh eased to a 2-1 Fourth Division win at Mansfield. Micky Gynn had opened the scoring in the opening 10 minutes.

CRICKET: Nenedale smashed the Peterborough Indoor six-a-side scoring record by cracking 118 in 10 overs against Welland. Paul Pettit (42), Kenny Owen (32) and Andy Walker (31) top scored in a 57-run win.

RUGBY UNION: A try from Ian Waites saw Bretton to a 4-0 win in a derby against Baker Perkins.

HOCKEY: Two goals from Bill Waterman and another by Linda Gill enabled St Johns to fight back and beat Sawtry 3-2 in a mixed friendly. Stuart Boyden scored twice for Sawtry.

40 YEARS AGO

FOOTBALL: Posh were 2-0 ahead at half-time through goals from Chris Turner and Richie Barker, but rock-bottom Hartlepool fought back to draw the Division Four clash at London Road 2-2.

BOXING: Leroy Panoo and Andy Dane were emphatic winners for Peterborough ABC in a tournament at the city’s technical college.

HOCKEY: Captain John Lake’s call for more effort fell on deaf ears as Peterborough Town were thrashed 6-0 by Leicester Westleigh in a friendly.

RUGBY UNION: And Peterborough Town Rugby Club fared little better against Westleigh opposition. “I’ve never seen us play so badly,” moaned Town skipper Pete Levoi after a 34-12 hammering when Quenton Craddock scored their only try.

SNOOKER: Mark Wildman led 18 year-old Willie Thorne 3-0 in the final of the Northamptonshire Area Final, but lost 4-3 after a final frame black-ball decider.

SWIMMING: Margaret Duell, Corrine Beresford and John Turner all set Peterborough Swimming Club records in a three-team event in Cambridge.

FOOTBALL: Eye United clinched the Wirrina Fives title with a 5-2 win over former champions Diesel. Dick Templeman bagged a hat-trick while Gary Allport and Mel Sambells also scored for the winners.
