10 YEARS AGO

POSH: It emerged striker Andy Clarke failed a random drug test following a recent local derby match against Cambridge.

ATHLETICS: Peterborough AC teenager Aileen Wilson was in record-breaking form at the Scottish AAA Indoor Championships. The King’s School pupil shattered the Scottish senior and British junior pentathlon bests with a great display of 4,096 points in Glasgow.

POSH: Captain Andy Edwards scored a freak equaliser with the help of a comical goalkeepin gaffe as Posh drew 2-2 at Blackpool in Division Two. Jimmy Bullard had earlier given Posh the lead from the penalty spot.

FOOTBALL: Peterborough Sports appealed to Football Association chiefs in a bid to lift a Peterborough League ban on their captain Joe Duffy for playing illegally while he was suspended.

ICE HOCKEY: City-born Great Britain international David Clarke hit two goals as his Milton Keynes side saw off Pirates 5-2. Darren and Jon Cotton scored for the city side in the derby defeat. FOOTBALL: Stamford goalkeeper Steve Corry pulled off a late penalty save to secure his side’s 2-1 success at Erith in the Dr Martens League. David Staff and Matt Green scored the Daniels goals.

SNOOKER: Alan Harwood, Pat Ferguson, Warren Springthorpe, Neil Springthorpe and Paul Harrison were in fine form as Fletton A whitewashed Eastfield Breaks B in the Peterborough Snooker League.

20 YEARS AGO

POSH: The club’s thrilling Rumbelows Cup adventure ended in a 1-0 quarter-final replay defeat at Middlesbrough. Goalkeeper Fred Barber was beaten by a stunning Stuart Ripley goal with 10 minutes to go. Posh boss Chris Turner handed local lad Hamish Curtis a shock debut at left-back at Ayresome Park.

ICE HOCKEY: Pirates’ home clash against Whitley was held up for more than two hours due to repair work to the city rink following a foam party the previous night. The teams eventually drew 4-4 with Carl Stripling (2), Darren Durdle and Andy Heinze scoring for Pirates.

SNOOKER: Bourne baize queen Karen Corr was beaten in the semi-finals of tournaments in Billericay and Saffron Walden in the same weekend. She lost to Stacey Hillyard on both occasions.

FOOTBALL: Steve Law slammed four goals as LT Athletic bashed Magpies 6-2 to breeze into the semi-finals of the PFA Sunday Morning Cup.

RUGBY: Pacy Paddy Wheeler roared in for five tries as Spalding smashed Southwell 50-0. Try-machine Wheeler took his try tally to 42 in 16 matches in the season.

HOCKEY: Peterborough Town youngsters Vicki Sandall (17) and Kirsty Bowden (14) were invited to attend England junior trials after impressing for the Under 18 East side.

30 YEARS AGO

POSH: Colin Clarke and Phil Chard struck fine late goals to add to an early Robbie Cooke penalty as Posh eased past Hull 3-0 in a Division Four clash watched by a crowd of 3,161 at London Road. Posh man Gordon Hodgson received the first red card of his 12-year career.

HOCKEY: Peterborough Town boosted their promotion hopes in Division One of the Norwich Union League as goals from Jimmy Wheeler and Brian Bayston earned a 2-1 derby triumph over Wisbech.

DARTS: City thrower Pete Hammond overcame a strong challenge from John Garner to win the Thorney Toll open singles competition and bank the £40 first prize.

RUGBY: A Gary Rice penalty was all Borough had to show for a 15-3 defeat at Kettering. Rice later gifted the hosts one of their tries with an error on his own line.

FOOTBALL: Referee Paul Douglas inadvertantly scored one of the goals as Crowland and Thurlby drew 5-5 after extra-time in a PFA Junior Cup replay. Douglas was hit by a cross late in normal time as Thurlby clawed their way level.

SPEEDWAY: Panthers legend Richard Greer admitted he had lost his enthusiasm for the sport and all but ruled himself out of riding for the city club in the new season.

ANGLING: Bretton schoolboy Peter Strickland (15) won the British Junior Pike Championship on the River Welland.

40 YEARS AGO

POSH: ‘It looked ImPoshible . . .’ was the ET headline after Posh dramatically snatched a point from 4-4 derby thriller against Lincoln at London Road thanks to an 88th minute Tommy Robson equaliser. Peter Price, Richie Barker and an own goal completed their haul.

FOOTBALL: Western Star succeeded where all before them had failed by becoming the first team of the season to defeat Peterborough Youth League Under 16 section top dogs Woodston Dynamo. Dean Richards (2), Verrol Lewis (2) and John French did the damage in a 5-3 Knockout Cup semi-final success.

RUGBY: Peterborough paid the price for slack finishing when going down 11-6 at Boston. They had numerous opportunities to add to a Geoff Stott try (converted by Tony McClure) but couldn’t take them.

FOOTBALL: Shane Lutkin (Deacons), Roger Negus (Walton), Alan Avison (Deeping), Paul Southgate (Jack Hunt) and Steve Hair (Stanground) helped Northants Schoolboys claim a 3-2 win over Leicestershire.

HOCKEY: Peterborough Town were held to a goalless draw by Cambridge City but new skipper Inky Hughes scored one of the goals as Town thirds beat Cambridge thirds 2-1.

FOOTBALL: Wisbech went 10 points clear at the top of the Eastern Counties League by beating Newmarket 3-0. Biggs, Copestake and Newell scored the goals.
