Green light given to £800,000 clubhouse

A spectacular new clubhouse for a rugby club on the former Bretton Woods school land has been given the green light by Peterborough planners.

The £800,000 building, will provide a permanent home for the Peterborough Lions Rugby Club after unanimously being given the go ahead at a meeting of Peterborough City Council’s Planning and Environment Committee yesterday (7 February).

The clubhouse will provide changing rooms, a stand to watch the games and a bar and lounge area that can be used by the club as well as community groups.

The Lions are currently using a temporary marquee, which has been a regular target for thieves and vandals.

Following the decision, club chairman Andy Moore said the decision means the club can move forward.

He said: “We’ve been looking to try and build the clubhouse here for nearly four years, so this is a delightful decision.

“It is good for sport in Peterborough, especially rugby, but also great for Bretton, as we want this to be a community club.

“Now we have got permission we can go ahead and look for funding and sponsorship for the building.”

Councillor Peter Hiller said the facility would be a great boost for the city.

He said: “This will be a quite splendid city scheme. It will be a great sporting facility, something that is sorely needed in the city.”

Cllr Lucia Serluca added: “This looks a fantastic facility with excellent sports facilities, something which Peterborough needs.”

The committee was told the club had received complaints from neighbours regarding noise pollution when late night functions were held in the past, but new equipment had been purchased which had solved the problems.

But the application may still be referred back to the planning committee, if the Woodland Trust objects to plans for a drain to be placed through nearby woodland.

In a letter sent to the committee, Cllr Nick Sandford said: “I find it incredible that officers say that putting a foul drain through the woodland can be done with no significant impact on it.

“Even if no trees have to be felled, there will be considerable damage to the ground flora.

“The wood contains fabulous displays of bluebells in the summer and these will almost certainly be damaged or destroyed.

“Ancient woodland plants once destroyed cannot be recreated and the ecology of the woodland may take hundreds of years to recover from any significant damage.”

Landfill plans approved in principle

COUNCILLORS agreed in principle to the idea of extending and allowing more hazardous waste to be deposited at a landfill site near Peterborough.

As part of an ongoing public consultation by Augean, which runs the East Northants Resource Management Facility, near King’s Cliffe, members of the planning committee were asked their opinions about its long-term proposals to extend the life of the site up to December 2026.

While a planning application has not yet been submitted, councillors agreed to the idea in principle.

The site currently accepts low-level radioactive waste and councillors were told the landfill site has a lining which means it is 18 times safer than a normal landfill site. Councillors were told there are three sites in the country to accept this kind of waste.

@JJCarter. For the record, Cllr. Sandford doesn't have a car and doesn't drive. More importantly, when the City Council demolished Bretton Woods School they ripped the heart out of the local community. The community use of school premises, including clubs and evening classes have never been replaced and residents lost access to the joint-use playing fields. Bretton Woods wasn't an academic beacon sending dozens to Oxford University each year, but it was an important community resource. I would hope Mr. Moore recognises this and allows mid-week access to local groups in his new project.

Re: the proposed extension of the Low Level Nuclear Waste dump at Kings Cliffe by Augean Ltd., The Planning Committee appear to have gone back on their previous opposition to dumping nuclear waste at this site. Although permission was eventually granted by Secretary of State Pickles last May after an extensive Public Inquiry, it was made clear that this was for a limited area and for a limited time and would not be a precedent. The site is a worked out clay pit over porous limestone. Water in the limestone feeds numerous springs and brooks, including some that flow into the R. Nene. In the approved area, Augean will be dumping waste contained merely in plastic bags with just 1metre of compacted clay and a layer of plastic sheeting to prevent any radioactive material from any broken bags from entering the water supply. Unless the proposals for the extended area are radically different I cannot see how they will be '18 times safer than a normal landfill site' since the domestic waste landfill at Waterbeach near Cambridge has at least 3metres of impervious clay underneath it. The planning officers and councillors are playing Russian roulette with our future safety. Peter Chivall

Sandford has gone beyond parody. He must leave his car crying his eyes out over the flys and bugs he squashed on the windscreen.

I just hope for reasons of 'cultural sensitivity' the bar will only serve non-alcoholic drinks
