White ribbon day
WHITE ribbons for people to show their support for the campaign to stop domestic abuse will be available to buy from today.
To mark National White Ribbon Day and the start of a fortnight of activities in the city to raise awareness about domestic abuse against both men and women, white ribbon pins will be available to buy.
The ribbon pins are available from the reception in the town hall, in Bridge Street, and Peterborough City Council’s customer service centre, in Bayard Place, in exchange for a £1 donation to Peterborough Women’s Aid.
The tradition of wearing a white ribbon began in 1991 when a group of men in Canada decided they had a responsibility to urge other men to speak out against violence against women. Wearing a white ribbon came to symbolise men’s opposition to men’s violence against women.
Gary Goose, strategy manager for the SaferPeterborough Partnership, said: “Wearing a white ribbon or something white demonstrates you are actively against domestic violence. We encourage people every year to wear a ribbon for two weeks to show that domestic abuse is unacceptable.
“Domestic abuse is a crime that can be experienced by anyone in all kinds of relationships.”
