Werrington skate park plagued by graffiti and litter

POLICE have upped patrols around a skate park after it was plagued by graffiti and litter for a second weekend in a row.

Werrington skate park on playing fields near to Ken Stimpson Community School and the Werrington Centre, officially opened last month after a five-year campaign by teenagers and local councillors.

But yobs have sprayed graffiti all over the concrete bowl and shelter of the £100,000 skate park and litter has been scattered around.

Sergeant Chris Couzens said police had upped their patrols in the area and warned yobs they could face court or a fine if they are caught causing damage.

He said: “We have been made aware of the issues at the skate park over the past couple of weeks and are working with Peterborough City Council to provide extra bins at the site.

“We have put on extra patrols and are committed to ensuring it is a pleasant environment for residents to enjoy.

“Graffiti is criminal damage and anyone caught committing this type of crime could face being taken to court or fined.”

Councillors are calling for action before the park becomes run-down.

Werrington North ward councillor John Fox said: “It is heart-breaking to see. If it was your own kids playing like this with their toys then you would just take them away from them.

“If they carry on abusing the park that might be what happens. The local lads respect it more because they live here and it is an unfortunate minority spoiling it for the rest of them.

“We fought so hard to get it for them,. It is very annoying and made us quite angry, we spent a lot of time and money getting this skatepark.

Fellow Werrington North councillor Stephen Lane added: “It does look untidy and although the council has installed two bins there, it does not seem that two is enough.

“They do get emptied daily but on the weekend they get full very quickly and I suppose that is when people are more likely to litter, so we are chasing the council for more bins.”

A council spokeswoman said: “It is a shame this has happened. We are working with Enterprise Peterborough to decide the best approach to graffiti in this area.”

Anyone with information should call police on 0345 456 4564.

As for litter, a teacher friend of mine tells me that her secondary school employs four staff (at our expense) to go round picking up litter left by the children after break times instead of making the children pick it up! If the children are allowed to drop litter with no sanctions in school it is little wonder they do it elsewhere. I blame the teachers and the parents!

The issues with this monstrosity have been going on for more than a couple of weeks. The litter, loutish behaviour and late night escapades are common place since the place was in the building stages. It is situated so close to a much used public footpath and is an eyesore. The turf has been torn up in many areas and strewn about, both the bins have been set on fire, empyt vodka bottles, beer cans, and general rubbish litter the entire area and spill onto the playing fields. I have voiced my concerns on many occasions to our local councillors, but until this latest episode nothing seems to have been done to sort out the many problems we as local residents have had to endure since it was constucted. A complete waste of funds, I hope the powers- that- be do take action and not just placate us with promises that something will be done!!! The whole area is a disgrace.

The local police team is only 200m away. I for one definitely don't want graffiti boards! There's problems in all the play plarks. Enterprise, the council and the police need to all be out and about a lot more during the day and during the night.

Very Anti-Police Henry, am sure you'd be happy if a PC on foot was rushing to your 999 call on the other side of the city. Just like you and me, they need cars too. That's why there are "local" teams, and teams that have to cover the entire city, to protect you and me.

The Peterborugh police could not 'upped' any thing, they drive around with their sun-glasses on and don't see a thing! The reason for this is that they are looking both ways and they get away with it. Get them out of their cars and on the beat (with out sun-glasses)

I think we all know the "yobs" will be given at most a slap on the wrist and their social worker(s) will be popping around to help them come to terms with their anger. Possibly a safari will be on the cards.
