Swimmers try to wipe out polio and beat a world record
ENERGETIC swimmers are hoping to make a splash in a world record attempt.
Deepings Rotary Club is teaming up with the Werrington Rotary Club to organise a swimarathon at Stanground Community College Sports Centre.
It will be taking place on February 25 as part of a planned global attempt at beating the Guinness World Record.
Organisers are hoping to get as many people swimming 100 metres at the same time.
Would-be record breakers will be swimming 100 metres non-stop without flotation devices, flippers or assistance between noon and 1pm on February 25.
The current record stands at 2,533 people.
The event is open to everyone of all abilities, groups, schools and clubs anywhere in the world.
In addition, the swimmers will also be raising money for the Rotary Club’s End Polio Now campaign by paying just £2 to take part.
Organiser Peter Hibbins said: “We are almost there. This helps the last big push as well as creating a world record that should be hard to beat.”
