GENEROUS residents have used their hair-raising exploits to raise hundreds of pounds for Sue Ryder – Thorpe Hall Hospice.

Its Febru-hairy campaign this month has seen people dye or shave their hair and wear wigs for the charity which provides palliative care at the hospice in Longthorpe.

Pupils at Winyates Primary School in Orton Goldhay embraced the campaign with gusto, raising £300 with their Hairy Friday event which saw them pay £1 to go to school in comedy wigs, stick-on moustaches and fancy dress.

Chris Dakin, who helped organise the event, said: “The school, parents and our local community all got involved and we received some amazing donations for our raffle, but it was the pupils who stole the show.

“They all looked amazing, made a great effort and had a great day.”

Among those braving the shaver was Danny Gordon, from Farcet, who raised £600 for Sue Ryder by shaving off his beard for the first time in 20 years.

The big occasion took place at Farcet Village Club where friends and family paid for the privilege of seeing the beard come off and were entertained by local band Easyersaid, who came second in Peterborough’s Got Talent.

Danny said: “Top lip’s a bit sore and the face feels cold but it was all worth it.”

Meanwhile, East of England Ambulance Service ambulance driver Tony Herson raised eyebrows, as well as £200 so far, by dyeing his beard purple for the month.

He said: “I come to Thorpe Hall Hospice every week as part of my role and I know what a good job Sue Ryder does. I’ve had a few funny looks from people but it’s worthwhile.”

Staff at El Esha hair salon, in Broadway, have also done their bit, heading to the hospice to pamper day care members for free.

It’s not too late to get involved. For more information call 01733 330060, email Thorpe.fundraising@suerydercare.org or visit www.sueryder.org/febru-hairy
