Scores turn out for family party
Acorn Children's centre celebrate Chinese New Year starting with a fancy dress competition
SCORES of people of all ages celebrated the start of 2012 with a belated, but nonetheless fun-filled New Year’s party.
The family-orientated event was held recently at the Acorn Children’s Centre, in Scalford Drive, Welland.
Organisers had decided to hold the celebration a little while after January 1 due to the typically busy schedules of families around New Year’s Day.
It was organised by the Cross Keys Homes housing association, together with the SaferPeterborough partnership, Parents United, Family Care, First Steps and Peterborough City Council.
Activities included arts and crafts, face painting, cookery demonstrations, a street dance workshop, karaoke, Zumba fitness, fancy dress competition and a Nintendo Wii dance off.
Cross Keys Homes’ community investment manager, Christina Malle said: “Over 80 people attended this event.
“People particularly enjoyed the Zumba and the street dancing sessions which was led by Kamal Hyman, Youth MP for Peterborough.
“There was also a wonderful cookery demonstration by the Desi Ladies Group.”
The theme for the event was “around the world” and it was opened by Typo the Panda from the Key Theatre pantomime and Phan Tom, the polar bear mascot of Peterborough’s ice hockey team, the Peterborough Phantoms.
Rachel Blakemore, coordinator for Parents United, said the event was a “huge success”.
She said: “We have had a lot of positive feedback from our families.
“To see the parents’ faces and see parents and children and the older generation joining in together was lovely.”
