CROSSING a busy Peterborough road has been made easier for pedestrians and wheelchair-users following concerns for safety among residents.

Dropped kerbs, a pedestrian refuge and bollards have been added to a section of Lincoln Road, close to its junction with Oxford Road, in Millfield.

Cllr John Sherman, member of Peterborough City Council for Park ward, took part in a wheelchair tour of the Millfield area with residents from the extra care facility The Pavillions, in Alma Road, in 2010, ahead of his election last year.

Of his experience, he said: “I was surprised by the number of difficulties I encountered. They were little things the ordinary pedestrian doesn’t think about such as stepping out onto the road.”

As a result, Cllr Shearman approached the council about possible improvements in the area.

At the section of Lincoln Road where the work has recently taken place wheelchair-users were facing lengthy journeys to find dropped kerbs and Cllr Shearman welcomed the improvements, describing them as a “godsend” for people affected.

A council spokesman said: “The dropped kerbs and pedestrian refuge were installed as a result of listening to community concerns about pedestrian safety in the area.

“The scheme will also help to prevent irresponsible parking outside the Lloyds TSB Bank. We are pleased to see wheelchair users enjoying the improved access.”

The spokesman added the project was one of many initiatives which fell under “Operation CAN-do”, a 10-year, multi-agency programme created to improve the quality of life in the Gladstone, Millfield and New England communities of Peterborough.”

Tell It Like It Is

Another waste of taxpayers money by PCC - they should concentrate on makng sure the roads are of a decent quality all over Peterborough before bending over backwards to spend all that money on a small strip of road. Other roads need the money spent more...Lincoln Road from Brotherhood to the north and south - appaling! Parkways - Appaling - especially near the new hospital. Do we, the normal people, really need to go on...and before you start, I have no gripe against disabled people but come on....be real!!!

Complain, complain, complain, that's all you disabled people ever do, how about being happy with what you have instead of forever complaining this isn't right, that isn't right ?? Run your wheelchairs a few extra yards down the road to the crossing instead of wasting my council tax money.

This is exactly what the Peterborough Disability Forum was set up for. I have been a member since day one. It as a say in every thing concerning the disabled in the City and is responsible for many ongoing improvements. Including the Changing places. It also as a say on the refurbishment of the Railway Station Van Hague and many more.

If you are disabled or elderly then those so called few yards are a long way away. I can only assume that those who comment in this manner also think that a disabled person or an elderly person is an irrelevance. It is sad that people still think in such a selfish manner and have such little humanity in their thinking. As the saying goes "There but for the Grace of God go I!"

I agree with the readers less than 50 metres to their left is a light controled crossing. The main reason that this has been built is to stop parking that why the plastic bricks are still there. So your the Can-do group well prehaps you could get the Milfield area cleaed up (Fag=ends bins emptied etc) One fact for sure is that you are lead by two authorities namely PCC and the Police and there both donkeys the area is disgusting.

Why don't they just use the pedestrian crossing a few metres down the road?
