Winner: Ben Iredale. Runners-up: Pam Mansfeld and Lord Kenneth T Montgomery-Moore.
Lifetime Achievement Award, sponsored by Peterborough Regional College
BEN was nominated by his wife, Pauline, for his dedication to supporting the city’s elderly. Pauline said: “I would like to nominate my husband because he works tirelessly for the senior citizens of East Community Centre in Padholme Road.”
Ben was chairman of the complex for 27 years and started a Tuesday Luncheon Club in 1992.
Pauline said: “Using his culinary skills (learned in the RAF on National Service), he has cooked more than 900 meals for 50 people every week since it started. He is not far off his 1,000th meal!
“On top of this he cooks around 10 Christmas dinners for various sections of the community, anywhere from 20 to 60 people. He is also the chef for all the social functions.”
Pauline added that until last year, Ben also catered for a luncheon club at the Sue Ryder Hospice.
“Ben is 79 years young and loves every minute of his voluntary work.”
Speaking after the ceremony, Ben said: “It was lovely of my wife to nominate me, so I was thrilled to have won.
“The evening itself was very well organised and Tricia Penrose really put everyone at ease. It was a first-class event.”
