FOURTEEN-year-old Ben was hailed a hero back in January this year after alerting the fire service when he discovered a flooded house.
He was delivering the ET on his regular round in Fulbridge Road, Dogsthorpe when he noticed that all the windows of a house were steamed up on the inside. Puzzled, the Thomas Deacon Academy pupil looked through the letterbox to see that chunks of the wall had come away and there was water everywhere.”
As a result, Ben, of Dogsthorpe, decided to ring Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service. Firefighters broke into the flooded property and turned off the water.
Callum Faint, station manager at Dogsthorpe Fire Station, thanked Ben for his quick-thinking and his concern, which could have prevented hundreds of pounds worth of further damage.
He said: “Without Ben’s actions the flood may not have been discovered until the owners of the property returned, causing even greater damage.”
The occupants of the flooded house are the Makate family, who had been away on holiday.
Speaking after the ceremony, Ben’s mum, Nicola, said: “Ben was really chuffed to have won, really pleased, but he was a little nervous beforehand. I really don’t think he expected to win.
“We are all really proud of him.”
