Winner: Rona Thickpenny. Runners-up: Gill Farr and Judith Turner.

Senior Citizen of the Year Award, sponsored by Wiltshire Farm Foods.

RONA was nominated by her daughter Julie Shortland, who said that her mum gets involved with everything!

Mrs Shortland said: “Mum moved to Whittlesey ten years ago and threw herself into village life.

“She loves patchwork and quilting and her quilts have raised hundreds of pounds for charity. She also makes them for premature babies at Peterborough Hospital and the mother and baby unit at the local prison.

“As well as becoming involved with Anna’s Hope, she joined EACH (East Anglia Children’s Hospices) and works as a volunteer for the local group, from bag packing and present wrapping to the Santa run around Ferry Meadows.

“Mum is also a friend of St Andrews Church in Whittlesey and served on the committee for some time. She has even befriended my neighbour. A widower with two teenage girls, mum regularly accompanies him to their school events and is almost a surrogate granny!

“She is a very giving lady, putting everyone else before herself. She works tirelessly to support local charities and is loved by everyone she knows.”

Speaking after the awards, Rona said: “I went thinking ‘what’s my daughter let me in for here’, but it was a lovely thing for her to do.

“I never dreamt I would win, because the other nominees had done such great things, but I am very pleased that I did.”
