LIZA runs Spencer’s Hair Salon in Peterborough, named after her son who has behavioural problems caused by dystonia, a neurological disorder.
One nomination said: “She raises disability awareness within the local community and the hairdressing industry, and raises funds for Phoenix, Cherry Lodge and Corpal. This year we had more than 300 guests attending Spencer’s Fire and Ice Ball. This event has raised more than £16,000 in the last two years.
“Recently she had her very long hair shaved off and raised £3,000. There are other things that she does on a daily basis, such as collecting ink cartridges, recycling old clothes, stamps and mobile phones.
“These special charities are so close to her heart. It is hard not to get caught up in her enthusiasm.”
Speaking after the ceremony, Liza said: “I really enjoyed the awards evening. When I heard my name called as the winner it was a very emotional moment and made me proud to be Spencer’s mum.
“Awards such as these are important for raising awareness of disability and what children and their families have to live with on a daily basis.
“It was lovely to have won, but I couldn’t have done it without my staff and clients. They are the backbone in everything I do.”
