Emotional and heartwarming stories of human kindness dominated this year’s Evening Telegraph Pride in Peterborough awards on Thursday evening (28 April).

From have-a- go-heroes to neighbourly acts, brave youngsters and adventurous senior citizens, the 2011 event brought tears to many eyes during the ceremony at the city’s Marriott Hotel.

Television actress Tricia Penrose – perhaps best-known for her role as Gina Ward in ITV’s Heartbeat – was the celebrity guest who hosted the ceremony.

Tricia handed out awards to the winners with the category sponsors and mingled with the shortlisted finalists and their families throughout the evening.

At times, Tricia was visibly moved by the stories of bravery, kindness and community spirit revealed on the night, saying afterwards: “I’m so pleased to have been invited to be involved with these wonderful awards.

“I have met some truly amazing people here tonight.

“‘Pride’ is such a healthy and positive message in these changing times and it is great to see that community spirit is alive and well in Peterborough.”

The ET’s Pride in Peterborough awards are held to honour all those people who do remarkable things but don’t expect anything in return.

ET editor, Mark Edwards hailed the event a great success, saying: “The annual Pride in Peterborough Awards celebrate the unsung heroes of the community.

“We have heard some truly amazing stories tonight – all of our shortlisted finalists have achieved astonishing things.

“We salute their achievements – these are the people who bring Pride in Peterborough.”

Award winners ranged from four-year-old Leo Waites, who has cerebral palsy, but after a gruelling series of operations in America, partly paid for by an appeal in the ET, is now able to walk unaided, to 79-year-old Ben Iredale for his tireless work on behalf of the senior citizens of East Community Centre in Padholme Road.

Why no immigrant achiever of the year? Surely one has done something positive...

Firstly, I would like to Thank all those who have taken the time in order to nominate me personaly for this years Pride of Peterborough Event.. I am very honoured to be - and continue to represent our citizens and those organisations and meaningful groups who work very hard to serve our community.. I must address, and give Thanks for the fact that if it wasn't for all those who are allowing me the opportunity and in trusting in me, and working along side me to become the "Voice For Those Who Whisper"- I would not be here doing what I can for our community of Peterborough.. "For That, I Thank each of you and those who work within these groups and organisations".. I have taken each one of these groups, committees and organisations very seriously with full dedication and devotion as it is to improve and safeguard all those who live in and around our city - regardless of Race, Religion, Class or Background. I am proud to be part of this community and will continue to support and represent those in our Great City in the very best way I can.. Thank You....
