Plea to help bid to save Yaxley library

THE determined chairman of a group set up to protect the library in Yaxley has called for more people to throw their weight behind the cause.

Mark Bright became chairman in May of the newly formed Friends of Yaxley Library (FOYL), which was created due to fears over the future of the facility.

The group gives people a platform to express their support for the library, which could be cut in the face of tough future financial savings.

Now the chairman has called on people to attend meetings of the support group and back its fund-raising events in Yaxley.

Mark said: “The FOYL has a committee which will meet regularly every six weeks, and our next meeting is on October 26 at 7pm.

“It is open to new members and interested parties, and we hope more people get involved to help protect the future of the library.

“The aims of the group are to enhance the facilities and services provided to the community by Yaxley Library through fundraising and social events.

“We also promote and publicise Yaxley Library within the community.”

The group has already had four exploratory meetings and a successful fundraising sale of books and DVDs at Broadway Shopping Centre, which raised £107.

Mark added: “Our next fundraising efforts will be at Yaxley Royal British Legion indoor boot sale on the morning of October 22, where we hope to sell off more books and DVDs.

“Following this, we will be having a mince pie morning at Yaxley Library and a book sale stall at the Christmas fayre, which will be held on November 26 at Broadway Shopping Centre.”

The group was set up after people who use the library, in Main Street, Yaxley, became worried for its future after a meeting in May at Queen Park Hall.

Mark added: “We were told about the predicted future of Cambridgeshire Libraries and the knock-on effect it would have on Yaxley Library, so a friends group was established.

“It was clear from the meeting in May that there was popular local support for the continuation or improvement to existing library services, rather than their degradation.”

FOYL also hopes people from outside Yaxley who travel to the village to use the library will throw their weight behind the campaign.

The library is open five days a week.

It is open from 2.30pm to 7pm on Mondays, and from 9.30am to 5pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, but is closed for an hour’s lunch break from 1pm on those days.
