Military band treat youngsters to concert
The RAF college band, based at Cranwell, entertain pupils from Werrington schools at Ken Stimpson School
A SCHOOL in Werrington was among a lucky few to be chosen to be a venue for a concert by an historic military band.
Ken Stimpson Community School, in Staniland Way, was one of only three schools out of 100 applicants to be selected for a performance from The Band of the RAF College, based at RAF Cramwell.
The band, which was established in 1920, played to pupils studying GCSE music, youngsters who play instruments from across all the school’s year groups and children from Ken Stimpson’s feeder primary schools.
In all, about 280 pupils listened to the band perform modern hits by the likes of Cee Lo Green.
This was as well as renditions of film and TV themes such as Harry Potter, The Bill and The Simpsons.
Robin Norman, head of music, said the concert proved a hit with the pupils.
He said: “The comments I have had from the non-musicians is they had a great time, they loved it, they never thought a military band could sound like that.
“From the instrumental students and GCSE students it was along the lines of ‘inspirational’ and ‘I really hope I can be that good one day’.”
