THE new Mayor of Whittlesey has got the perfect name for the job, after Kay Mayor was selected for the position on Wednesday evening (11 May).

Councillor Mayor, who is also a district councillor on Fenland District Council, was supported unanimously for the role by Whittlesey Town Council and was nominated by Cllr Stephen Garrett.

She said: “I would like to thank every member of the council for the support that has been given to me.

“It is a privilege to have been chosen for this position and those of you with a longer memory will remember that in the early 1990s I was the chair when it was a parish council.”

Outgoing mayor Derek Stebbing, who has served in the position for the last two years, said: “It has been a real privilege to serve the people of Whittlesey.

“It has been a very busy two years – the number of formal civic events is increasing all the time.

“The role of a mayor is a civic one, it is representing the town and the community as a whole. Businesses tend to want figureheads to push things through.

“Kay has been chairman of the council before, she has been the deputy mayor and she knows what she is getting herself in for.”
