Green waste collection charge plan

RESIDENTS in Stamford, Bourne and the Deepings could be charged £25 a year for their green waste collection.

South Kesteven District Council has announced it is considering imposing the charge for garden waste collections from the start of the next financial year in April.

The charge comes as a result of public consultation events held in the summer of 2010 and significant reductions to the council’s central government grant.

The aim is that this would help offset, but not cover, the operational costs of the service and effectively means that those who use the service will contribute towards it.

South Kesteven District Council’s portfolio holder for healthy environment, Cllr John Smith said: “The issue of green waste charging was first raised in November 2007 when we said we might have to look at charging for the service, so we have been able to put this off for five years.

“It is important to remember that this is an optional service for our residents so if this goes ahead and people decide they don’t want to pay they can choose not to use the service.”

The final decision will be taken at a full council meeting in March.

Up until the last few years people seemed to manage ok composting the stuff. Anti-social burning or expensive collection aren’t the only 2 options. I don’t believe most people were ever stuffing their black bin full of grass clippings. I think it’s totally stupid to collect all year on the off chance that someone has done some major pruning. You’ve even got people paying to have their brown bin cleaned every 2 weeks… While South Kesteven do a lot of things better than we do we shouldn’t follow suit in this case. Cancel the brown bin altogether instead.

People will just start putting it in their black bin again. My black bin is only half full anyway so I could easily fit it in there too.. I thought they made compost from it and sold it back to us on the cheap. surely that would cover the cost. Another idea would be to bag the compost and a lorry visit your area on a rota system so you could buy it direct and save collecting from the centre. There are all sorts of opportunities

Have they calculated the cost of administrating and collecting the fee. Collect all green bins or none at all, I say!. You might be sending vehicles down streets with green bins one week and then someone decides to go with the system when they move in, you then have to go down that street to collect one bin. Bonkers!

£25 a year on top of council tax , i was of the impression ( wrongly it may seem ) that waste removal was covered within council tax !

Great, so more people dumping conifer cuttings in ditches or on the roadside at the dead of night plus other organic waste to go with the flytipping already there.. Brilliant. You couldn't make it up.
