I have to say I agree with your reader’s letter (Failings are not due to Immigrants, Thursday, February 9, 2012).

I took a walk along the river on Wednesday for the first time since it snowed on Saturday, and found that a large proportion of the river was frozen over, and the many swans and other wildlife there were obviously in great distress.

It is all very well for Cllr Fitzgerald to huff and puff away about civic pride and patriotic whatever, but despite my letter asking where the money for the Olympic torch jolly will be spent having been published now for some days, it still does not answer the question of into whose pockets and for whose benefit £93,000 is being spent when the Olympic torch comes to Peterborough.

WITH regards to Herlington House being auctioned off by the city council, I would like to know if it has considered social landlords managing this property? With people in Peterborough and the Ortons in desperate need of more affordable/social housing I would hope this would be their first port of call.

In response to MP Stewart Jackson’s letter ‘The difference between an MP and a councillor’ (February 1), I would like to point out to Mr Jackson that Westminster and his Conservative-led Government has cut the amount of money that Peterborough council will get this year.

It is one thing for Cllr Fitzgerald to reply to my letter (“Costly stunts do not instil civic pride”, ET Letters, February 2), even though he did so employing the methods of distortion and misrepresentation, but quite another to use that as an excuse to attack migrant workers.
