Locals caught in Bretton speeding crackdown

RESIDENTS campaigning for motorists to cut speeds in a city street were shocked to find most culprits police stopped during a clampdown were from their own neighbourhood.
People in Bretton had asked for radar guns which can be used by neighbourhood teams to monitor drivers' speeds on Bretton Way – a 40mph duel carriageway.

They complained that pedestrians were in fear of their life when crossing the busy carriagewa
y because of motorists using the road as a rat-run.

To address the issue, City West Neighbourhood police team clamped down on commuters travelling to and from work along Bretton Way earlier this month.

They had expected to educate drivers who were unfamiliar with the road layout about the dangers of driving over 40mph in that area.

But to their amazement officers found that the majority of offenders they pulled over were drivers from the Bretton area.

Three drivers travelling at excess speeds were given fixed penalty notices which include a fine of £60 and three penalty points.

And four people are due to appear in court and could have their licence revoked because they were so far over the speed limit that three points and a £60 fine would not be sufficient punishment.

Pc Jackman said: "The vast majority of drivers using this road stick to the limit but others don't and we wanted to get a clear picture of the speeds they were doing. I was surprised when the majority of people I had to stop and offer words of advice to, were residents.

"Remember, the 40mph limit is there for the safety of all of Bretton, residents families, friends and neighbours.

"I would also like to remind people we are out and about in the area and that speeding drivers face a roadside interview. If you don't want to be pulled over and interviewed by police don't speed."

Bretton Way has an underpass which allows access from one side to the other but some pedestrians don't like using them and instead use the road which has sweeping bends meaning they are invisible to on coming vehicles.

Bretton councillor Darren Morley said: "The whole stretch of Bretton Way is a rat run, people should know they have to take care.

"Speeding is an issue which was discussed at the recent police panel meeting and we are working together to look for solutions."

Parish Council chairman Henk Kamminga said they were looking into different traffic calming measures to stop speeding motorists such as flash up signs or speed cameras.

He said: "Discussions with the police, residents and the council are all ongoing. Whatever the method chosen there will be costs involved but something needs to be done."

I imagine this would be the same in most areas, mostly locals speeding etc so is not a shock. Hopefully this may force them to slow down.

Haha what a joke. such a waste of time, why not catch all the criminals and put them away. that way the streets would be safe to walk and people wouldnt 'get hit by speeding cars'
the only reason they are doing it is to make some money from the fines. they dont get anything by coming out to car break ins at 6am, so they dont bother with the things that really matter.

How ruuuuuude! no i havent actually. but i have been victim of 2 car break in's when i lived in bretton, and the police havent bothered to come out!
such a joke, they think they are doing the community good by catching speeding people and giving fines - their just wasting their time and our money! Do the things that matter.

Out of interest, when was the last time someone was run over on Bretton Way...?

This seems to be a fairly common outcome when the police do this - remember something similar in Ely a few months ago. On my way to work through a village I do the 30mph limit only to be overtaken by vehicles that then turn into driveways.

And K7mfy I have absolutely no idea what your point is!

I'd like them to have a year-round crackdown on drivers speeding around all residential areas of the city, not just on Bretton, the Ortons, the Hamptons, etc.

Move the focus from the Parkways, A1 and other outer roads and bring it to the streets!

They have plenty of time to deal with this as they only send text messages to people who have a burglary in progress. I recently reported an incident of dangerous driving in Bedfordshire and two Cambridgeshire Officers came to see me. Standing in my front room they looked at each other, pulled a face and then announced they didn't know why they were here ! They, quite simply, hadn't got a clue what to do. After a conversation with an Inspector the two were duly rollocked and two others came who knew what they were doing. They took statements and the offender was dealt with.

K7mfy's point is that they're doing this kind of thing, to one "make the roads safer" but also to pull extra cash in through fines, where as when a Bretton resident needs them, like we have done on more than one occassion over car break ins, they don't have the time of day to even bother with it. We've had a car broken into (or attempts) on 3 seperate occassion in the past 12mths and they've been out just once and even then they did nothing! Every other time, they haven't even given it a minute of their day!

I think Bretton Way does needs something to slow people down - it's got such long stretches of straight(ish) road, it's quite easy to pick up speed and go over the speed limit. Of course there complete numpties that insist on banging down there at 60mph and get away with it because they can. But I dont think sitting in a mobile unit with the speed gun for a couple of days is gonna do it.

K7mfy i completly agree with your point i had my car broken in to 3 times over the space of a year in bretton,Police were absolutyly worthless AND my dad is even a sargent!! the last time they caught the guy smashed my car and nicked everything in there was then released cos he was 17 not 18!! He got a slap on the wrist..its all a joke, yes they do need to target speeding but thats the last of brettons worries and far from the worst problem in the area!!!
