A DISABLED Peterborough man is heading to Westminster today to lobby the Parliament for fairer access to bus travel and urge for changes to the Concessionary Bus Travel Act.
Deafblind resident Graham Hics (47), from North Bretton, Peterborough is joining 70 pensioners and disabled people from around the UK to talk to MPs and hand over a letter to the Department of Transport.

Mr Hics says the act, which came into force in April, has left out many vulnerable people who rely on free bus travel in their day-to-day lives.

Under the terms of the act, eligible users – who are defined as aged 60 or over or eligible disabled – are allowed free off-peak bus travel across the country. It is also at each local authority's discretion whether or not they offer free travel for companions.

However, Mr Hics, who was born with a severe sight impairment and was deaf by the age of 16, says this is unfair for the many eligible users who have to travel off-peak.

He said: "I am one of those deafblind people who needs a companion when travelling, so the new bus pass system means that I have to pay for a companion.

"The Government must extend the national concession to cover peak time travel and companion passes."
