NEW crime figures paint an encouraging picture of crime generally falling in areas in the west of Peterborough.
Statistics just released by the neighbourhood policing team show crime has plummeted by 38 per cent in Ravensthorpe and seen an eight per cent drop in North Bretton.

Although South Bretton shows a slight increase in crime, it is only four additional incidents.

Westwood and Ravensthorpe police community support officer (PCSO) Julia Harrison said the team believed that working together as a community benefits everyone.

She added: "Recent figures show we are working efficiently and successfully to help reduce crime in the area, and improvements have been seen across the board with a few exceptions."

The number of burglaries has gone down from 35 to 24 over the period April to July with non-dwelling burglaries down by 80 per cent.

PCSO Harrison added: "It shows being more security conscious has really paid off, so keep up the good work."

Safety warnings have also been heeded when it comes to cars and vans – with thefts of vehicles and theft from vehicles seeing huge decreases.

Criminal damage reports have more than halved, but anti-social behaviour has seen its usual seasonal increase.

PCSO Harrison added: "The really good news here, if you were not aware, is that following the recent panel meeting, a priority has been set to tackle the anti-social behaviour in Westwood and Ravensthorpe and most particularly the area around the Hampton Court Shopping Centre."

Bretton has seen a slight increase in dwelling burglaries.

Pc Mike Jackman said: "We are only dealing with low figures here, but clearly one dwelling burglary is one too many.

"I'm sure many of people saw an article in The Evening Telegraph a short time ago regarding the apprehension of a burglar caught in the act in Bretton. And I would urge all residents to be on the look out and, if unsure, call the police."

Violent crime saw a reduction of more than 35 per cent in North Bretton and 90 per cent in the South Bretton.

However, criminal damage and anti-social behaviour did see large increases, which is often a seasonal trend.

Pc Jackman added: "We have our hands full here in Bretton, but continue to provide a first class service to all our residents, continuing to make Bretton a safe place to work, visit and live.

"But if you don't report it, we don't get to hear about it. It's your neighbourhood, let's work together and move forward.

"If you would like to contact a member of your local policing team, you can always catch us when out and about on our push bikes or alternatively, call 0845 456 4564 and ask to be put through to individual you would like to speak with."

i would just like to add a comment in reply to this PSCO comment about crime, last night me and my family had to witness an organised gang fight with upto 25 men (not boys) all of which were eastern european, and it was none the less very disturbing to see people putting someones head on the curb and stamping on it repeatedly and taking it in turns to use heads as footballs until at least 4 required hospital treatment, as usual police response time was brill, (got there after the fight had finished) there has also been several little fights between different nationalities over the past 4-5 weeks and alot of disturbing sites for which i would rather my children didnt have to watch, now in my opinion either people just cannot be bothered to report these crimes as they know nothing will happen and they will probably be harrassed and driven out like i know a few people that have already, or this PSCO is walking round with her eyes shut, but things certainly dont look good in ravensthorpe.

Day 2 in the big brother Area Westwood/ravensthorpe: hostage situation, armed police, area sealed off all day and big sniffer dogs, oh how crime is reducing in our area, Maybe car crime and burglary has come down in numbers but Mass fights anti-social behaviour and hostages have gone up (whats more important- broken car window or organised crime on the scale we have now)maybe its time people in our community get together and reduce the figures properly.

Ian,
You are talking about two isolated incidents. You make it sound as if Westwood and Ravensthorpe is a hotbed of gang related violence and gun crime. You make a better job of sensationalism than the tabloids do. On the whole the area is a better place to live than it was this time last year. Rather than knocking the police and PCSO's and making veiled threats about forming the Westwood and Raventhorpe Vigilantes, do something constructive. Have you spoken to your Neighbourhood Policing Team, attended panel meetings, formed a Nieghbourhood watch group for your area?
In the main start being positive instead of negative!

In light of the comment full of assumptions from the viking, These incidents arent isolated we have been watching them for weeks,AND REPORTED THEM!! when your kids watch out of a window and see someones head on the curbstone being stamped on and kicked like footballs then we will see how sensational they are!! until then keep locked up in your house and leave your comments to your self regarding that... No 2 where did you see the word VIGILANTE in my comment Oh! you didnt, guess you should leave that one alone too then.. in answer to your question we have spoken to the landlords of the problem houses, we have had the police here no less than 5 times in 4 weeks and as for neighbourhood watch! i was the only one who has reported things and done CONSTRUCTIVE things about it hence my comment and i quote "perhaps the poeple in our community need to get together and reduce the figures properly because half dont want to see whats happening and the other half are obviously blind !!!! i think that answers all your assumptions correctly!!!enjoy your tea.....

Ian,
Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you. Thankyou my tea was nice, Pasta Bolognese. Lovely.
Anyway back to the conversation in hand. The Vigilante comment was made on what was percieved by your comment. If this was taken out of context then I apologise. But if I percieved it then I'm sure many others also thought you meant the same thing.
I still do not believe Westwood is a hot bed of organised crime. And to be honest the broken car windows if, not dealt with lead onto much bigger things.
If you have been complaining to the Police and nothing gets done then you need to complain to the right department. If a reactive officer comes out to you they are only interested in dealing with the present and getting off to the next job. Your local Police Officers (two of them) and PCSO's (3 of those are the ones you need around at your house. Give them both barrells and tell them to sort out your problem neighbours. They work closely with other organisations.
I know for a fact, local officers combined with Cross Keys sorted out a whole host of ASB in one street just by one threatening letter of eviction.
So next time you see one of the above mentioned people cycling about then talk to them......or phone or e-mail. You may be suprised by the level of service you do get!
