A police speed spot-check outside a Peterborough primary school revealed irresponsible drivers risking children's lives – by not slowing down.
In just one hour, 13 motorists were clocked going well over the 30mph speed limit in Hartwell Way, near Highlees Primary School, and it is feared these scenes are being repeated across the city.

With traffic the biggest "accidental" killer of children in the UK – and 20 children seriously injured or killed on Peterborough roads last year, compared with 10 in 2006 – police and councillors are urging drivers to cut their speed, particularly outside schools.

What do you think the issue?

Casualty reduction officer Pc Tony Barrios said: "Speed limits are not targets to be beaten. It's 30 miles per hour for a reason and certainly should be outside all schools – if not even less.

"It is totally irresponsible to drive at those speeds at that time of the day. Local drivers know there is a school there and should be more careful."

Officers had set up the mobile speed check to monitor drivers between the peak school leaving time of 2pm and 3pm and were shocked to see drivers blatantly flouting the speed limits.

Police Community Support Officer Martin George said: "As all drivers have to pass a test, I would expect people to be aware that Hartwell Way is a 30mph limit. When I spoke to some of the drivers, it was apparent that they lived locally and drive along the road every day.

"Dangers are ever-changing. Please take care around your area, there are plenty of gaps that children can run from along this route."

Deputy mayor of Peterborough councillor Gul Nawaz, who represents the Ravensthorpe ward, today condemned the speeders and said he and fellow ward councillor Harry Newton had received many complaints about the issue.

Cllr Nawaz added that he would be urging the council to put in place either a 20mph limit, or other traffic calming measures.

He said: "Its a worrying time, something should be done before a child is killed in the city. Drivers have to slow down. It is just not acceptable."

In June, The Evening Telegraph reported how Murrow Primary School, near Wisbech, had taken part on a nationwide safety march to stop road deaths.

The campaign Watch Out, There's a Kid About!, is calling for the Government to reduce the urban default limit to 20mph and introduce safe crossing places such as pelican crossings around schools.

And only last week, The ET revealed that even with these measures, bullying motorists were hounding lollipop ladies, with 81 drivers being reported for illegally failing to stop for the school crossing patrollers.

Whilst I completeley agree with the comments about not speeding past schools etc. I cannot remember an incident involving a child at that part of the road. The school is not directly on Hartwell Way and the majority of pupils don't have to go near the road when they leave the school. Is this not just another ploy to make some easy money off motorists?

I get SO fed up with inconsiderate parents around school areas - speeding along Eastfield Road is bad and can't be blamed on parents alone, however the same can't be said for the amount of parents parking like idiots on yellow lines - blocking the road as they drop their beloved offspring off down Gildenburgh Avenues beggars belief...that is my bugbear...I'd like to see an officer issing on the spot fines...

Step One

Parking officers to randomly pick primary schools every day, twice a day and ticket all those who are illegally parked near a school.

Step Two

If there are to be speed cameras put them near schools.

Step Three

Educate; and I don't mean the schools or the council or the governments I mean the parents; the children that roads and footpaths are not somewhere to play. They can be very dangerous.
If a child runs from between two vehicles into the path of a vehicle then prosecute the parents with all the vigour that is used to prosecute a driver who is driving without due care and attention.
If 'you' drive a vehicle then 'you' are responsible for the way 'you' use it on the public highway, if 'you' bring children into this world then as long as they are not deemed responsible for their actions 'you' are responsible for their actions on the public highway.

As long as there is an attitude that it is someone else's 'fault' children will never learn that they also have responsibilities.

Yes those speeding motorists were wrong but so are the parents who park illegally to drop off or pick up their children from school and so are the children who think that they can just run around and others have to take evasive action. Tackle all three and the accidents will decline blame motorists yet again and that feeling that it's just another motorist bashing scenario will make no difference as parents and children think that their behaviour can be blamed on others and it washes over the heads of motorists.

"It is just not acceptable."

An unfortunate quote from Cllr Nawaz.

Perhaps he would like to examine other issues to which most of us might say "It is just not acceptable" and ensure that appropriate action is taken there.

it's not just speeding past schools that is an issue - there is a lack of consideration in a lot of respects -we have cars speeding in narrow roads where it is inappropriate to do so, motorcycles using cycleways and cycles on the footpath. Has nobody ever heard of the highway code?

It's coming to something when you have to launch a campaign to tell drivers not to put children's lives at risk. You drive slowly around schools - and in fact any area where there is likely to be children as a matter of courtesy. There is no excuse for speeding anyway - "I was running late..." leave earlier then you idiot - it's simple!
Driving penalties are not harsh enough - ALL speeding offences should carry an automatic driving ban - no excuses!

at werrington primary school, we have had many incidents of inconsiderate driving and speeding, even to the point that the local residents have to stand outside their houses and report it to the police themselves(fat lot of good that done)!in the past i had to do the school run so i'm not being a hypocrite, it just means selfish and inconsiderate drivers really need to sort out themselves before the situation reaches boiling point!park 100m further up the road thats all it takes! why do they insist on parking right on the schools doorstep on the zig zags on the road, blocking peoples drives and on the pavements so myself and other parents with prams have to walk on the road. SELFISH PR*TS !

Not being funny, but have children these days lost the use of their legs???

What is wrong with walking to school, maybe it will help with all the fat kids and parents you see nowadays, falling out of the 4x4's parked up outside someone elses driveway

I have a fast car and speed is ok in appropriate places, not near primary schools, make offenders attend awareness courses showing images of children that have been runover, that shud make an impact on them

Huntingdon, Tennesse has a elementary school and High school together

School buses stop and every car no matter which way they are travelling stop until all the students get off the bus

No parking anywhere near the school. Just nothing

15mph speed limit

and a deputy sherrif standing there with a huge gun on his belt

Result -no problems

People here just don't care.
