PASTON is holding a day of action to make it a "cleaner and safer place in which to live".
At the same time, community organisers are paying tribute to popular local pensioner Dorothy Barclay, who sadly passed away earlier this year.

Widowed Dorothy (79) had been a victim of the vicious ride-by-robber, and died weeks later of a stroke.

She was known to everyone in the Sheepwalk area as Dot, and was a fixture in Paston on her daily walk to the local shops.

Her daughter was due to open the day of action in Sheepwalk and Paynesholm on Tuesday (August 27).

The day is an extension of July's week of action, which saw agencies across Peterborough unite to clear up the streets and provide crime advice.

Neighbourhood Policing Sergeant Alan Bradshaw urges residents to get involved and come along and discuss their problems.

He said: "We will be promoting crime prevention and its impact on anti- social behaviour.

"There will be a street briefing at 6pm for residents of Sheepwalk and Paynesholme, and officers will also be door-knocking.

"As can be seen from police panel meetings, talking to us face-to-face and telling us your problems can make a difference."

The day started at 11am on the green between the two streets and will close at about 3pm, with the evening briefing to follow.

Paston Area Community Trust (PACT), working in partnership with Peterborough City Council, and the police will be joined by Cross Keys Homes, Accent Nene, Peterborough Regional College and other partners at the day.

The event is joint-led by PACT's Environment and Crime group – part of a police initiative following on from the weeks of action.

Along with the serious stuff, there was due to be plenty of fun activities for children, including storytelling sessions run by Peterborough Libraries and a circus skills workshop.

Volunteers were also welcome to help with the clean-up of the local area by Peterborough City Council's Environmental Services team.

Vice-chairman of PACT Tom McLellan said: 'It promises to be a fun day for local residents to join in and show their community spirit.

"At the same time, we are promoting a serious message about cutting crime and improving the environment in line with PACT's aims to make Paston a cleaner and safer place in which to live."
