YOBS who are using Werrington Parkway as a racetrack for their cars have made residents' lives "a nightmare".
A Werrington couple have spoken of sleepless nights due to the sounds of squealing tyres and roaring engines reverberating through their home in the early hours of the morning.

Patrick Cleathero warned police that someone is going to get killed if they can't put a stop to the drivers tearing up the parkway in the middle of the night and skidding into the Dukesmead estate where they live.

Mr Cleathero (58) said: "I have been ringing the police for months to get them to sort this out. My wife is sick with stress as we are not getting any sleep. The noise went on for more than three hours on Sunday night, it's become a nightmare."

The couple, who moved to Dukesmead for their retirement years, now find their peace and quiet shattered as yobs perform handbrake turns at the roundabout.

Werrington South Councillor Colin Burton went out to inspect the roundabout on Tuesday evening at the Brookfield Industrial Estate after he received a call from a distraught Mr Cleathero and urged police to take action.

He said: "The tarmac at the roundabout has been turned black from the burnt rubber from tyres caused by yobs skidding to a halt as they take the turn at top speeds.

"This is just along from a residential mobile home park, a busy footpath and a popular cycle path. The tyre marks go past where the footpath is and right into the site of the mobile home park and I worry that someone is going to be killed if they can't be caught."

The footpath is particularly popular with people returning from Werrington village at 11pm which is the peak times for the "boy racers" to be racing along the parkway.

A police spokesperson said: "Officers are aware of this problem and where we receive information about incidents of this nature, we do provide a presence, often in an unmarked police vehicle.

"Where offences are revealed, penalty notices and section 59 warnings for anti-social vehicle use are issued. If a driver receives more than one Section 59 warning their vehicle may be crushed."

Speeding remains a local policing priority after the last police panel meeting in September singled out speeding in Werrington Village from the A15 at Mancetter Square through to David's Lane.

Where the hell are the Police?
A it`s happening. B it`s not. If it is then why the hell can`t the police intercept them and put them away? After all the police keep bleating about this kind of thing is one of their priorities.
We have soon got to make a decision as to whether we take the problem of maintaining law and order into our own hands.

nice one JB...

no matter where we live in this town the police are failing us.. for me in New Fletton it's no different, anti social behaviour, street drinkers (alcoholics by any other name), drug dealing, graffiti....

i actually helped X keys in a matter, since i've been targeted for this.... I have had nothing from X Keys, nothing from the police, basically i'm now left high & dry... thanks for the support!

I would tell anyone else who thinks of giving information DONT! you will be used for the time your doing their work & then left to get on with it...

I will now do things "my own way"....

The Police ARE out there, but Peterborough is a big city.

No matter how many officers are out there, they'll always be seen to be failing in some area or other. It all comes down to priorities, if someones life is at risk, they will come first.

"Taking the law into our own hands" isn't the way forward, the more information the Police have the better, I'd just pass on the information and let them get on with it.

These Anti-social people will get stopped sooner or later, and loose their vehicles.

y'know what BKK?

when you call the police for days & days & days reporting what they tell us at the tri monthly meetings that anti social behaviour & all of the rest of the issues ARE "panel priority" AND there's still no action it gets rather tedious, not to mention the cost of the calls too!!

WE NEED 24HR POLICING ... NOT 6AM - 10PM

EXCEPT WEEKENDS WHEN THE TOWN IS TOP BILLING... IF YOU LIVE IN THE SURROUNDS THEN HARD LUCK TILL MONDAY AT THE EARLIEST

BKK - your quote of 'These Anti-social people will get stopped sooner or later, and loose their vehicles' is quite laughable! Can you supply figures on vehicles confiscated in Peterborough due to anti-social behaviour? The courts in this country are a joke and thats even if any cases actually get taken there by the police. This will eventually turn into a country where people will rebel and sort these morons and other anti-socials out themselves - sooner the better in my mind.

Lord Trenchards Brat ... can you supply the figures?

To have a vehicle confiscated doesn't have to go to the courts, the police can impound a vehicle under Sec 59, ASBO's will go to court. Courts and the Police are separate issues.

I'm not going to harp on about this, everyone has their own views, this is just mine. All I can say is if you want to make a difference, join the Police and then share with the rest of us how easy/difficult a job it is.

OK.....
my brother is an officer in Lincoln, a conversation between my mum & me.... my brother told her he's getting extremely disillusioned with the whole catch em so the courts release em scenario.... he goes on to say it's almost like your nicking the same people week after week...

BKK - my point is how many times does this happen. It doesnt and therefore all the legislation and headlines harping on about 'ASBO' this and 'section blah di lah' that is just that....talk and print. I would join the police but could not have enough self control to ensure the safetly of people I would knick. As trottz says from his relatives experience we are far to soft and even if they get banged up they have more privilages and comforts than I can afford...gyms...health suites...education....sky tv etc etc There was never anything wrong with 'stocks' and 'public floggings' - the Arabs world have it right. Chop of hands and feet if your caught. Stops that individual and acts as a REAL deterent to others! Oh....youve got me started now! LOL

unfortunately this countries policing policy is...

RE-ACTIVE rather than PRO-ACTIVE..

always chasing the offenders after the act...more coppers at all hours is what's required, not all off home at 10pm, cos all the baddies have now gone home too.... we live in a 24hr society but the police STILL have to get this through their heads, we need them out there 24/7.... period!

The police are a joke in most of this country. However, I do feel the front line police are in a no win situation.

It's time to get rid of these waste of time and powerless PCSO's. All officers should be real Police to arrest etc.

I do agree they need to be proactive and back to the bobby on the beat and not be reactive. Also end these stupid targets for speeding motorists and other minor things and start getting on the beat.

Cracking down on anti-social behaviour has been shown to stop many other crimes and make areas safer.

Sadly whilst we live in a PC society, only the criminals and those who do not pay tax or contribute matter - the rest of us just have to stop it ourself or put up with it.
