A PROPOSAL to build a block of flats that was branded a "monstrous carbuncle" has been rejected by Peterborough City Council.
Council deputy leader Stephen Goldspink's comments came after developer Asif Iqbal submitted a plan to demolish an existing home in Ashcroft Gardens, Eastfield, Peterborough, and build 10 two-bedroomed flats in its place.

Believing that the character of Ashcroft Gardens could be ruined if the scheme was given the go-ahead, Cllr Goldspink reached for a phrase coined by Prince Charles when he criticised an extension to London's National Gallery in 1984.

Cllr Goldspink said: "Perhaps we can persuade Prince Charles to criticise the profiteering of the 'monstrous carbuncle' crew?

"This is currently the site of a very pleasant two-storey residential house in an area where there are only two-storey buildings."

However, after reviewing the scheme, planning officers threw out the application.

Meanwhile, the authority has also rejected an application from Mr Iqbal's brother, Kazir.

He had submitted a separate bid to build eight two-bedroomed homes and a one-bedroomed dwelling across three back gardens in Scotney Street, New England, Peterborough.
