Steam special The Christmas Tynesider will depart from Peterborough on its way to York, Durham and Newcastle on Saturday, December 19, and you could be waiting at the platform to step aboard the train’s vintage carriages. Courtesy of The Railway Touring Company, the Telegraph has a pair of premier dining tickets worth £378 to give away to the winner of our Christmas Steam Competition.

1937-built steam locomotive A4 Pacific 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley will haul The Christmas Tynesider whisking Christmas shoppers and sightseers away on a nostalgic journey northwards with a choice of destinations – festive York, the fine city of Durham or vibrant Newcastle. Our lucky competition winner will travel premier dining, enjoying a full English breakfast and light lunch as The Tynesider heads north and a four course dinner silver served at their seats on the homeward journey.

Passengers choosing to spend the afternoon in York will have the pleasure of exploring its ancient alleyways, visiting the splendid Minister or shopping along the famous Shambles, all lit up for Christmas. Travellers for Durham might like to visit the hilltop cathedral and if you stay on board for Newcastle there will be chance to visit the city’s contemporary river front or Baltic gallery. Returning home by steam full of the joys of Christmas The Railway Touring Company warns day trippers to watch out for celebrity passenger Father Christmas who will be joining the train with gifts for children.
