Peterborough businessmen Chris Hammond and Duncan Exton viewed Monarch Automotive's takeover of the Perkins Engine Company Service Garage earlier this year as presenting a massive business opportunity.
Chris and Duncan, who have worked in the motor industry most of their lives, have identified a great opportunity and can see a great potential for growth and development.

The previous business, Perkins Service Garage, was set up in the '60s, initially geared to servicing Perkins Engines' vehicles, then, in the last 25 years, developed into a retail operation.

Chris and Duncan aim to further develop and transform the facility and business to become the highly-acclaimed credible alternative to the main dealer for both the business/fleet vehicle operator and private motorist alike.

"We see that this is an untapped sector of the market in Peterborough which we can build on and develop," said Duncan.

"A lot of people use a main dealer, but we feel we can provide better customer service. So, for example, when someone phones up and asks can you service my car, whether it is today, tomorrow or next week, the answer is yes.

"We are committed to satisfying our customers as we work to fit around their time scales, not the other way around. our customers are the purpose of our day."

Monarch Automotive, based at Frank Perkins Way, in Peterborough, is more than three months into an extensive building refurbishment and an equipment refit programme, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2009. All in all, about £500,000 is being invested in the refurbishment scheme.

Chris and Duncan bring the experience of their other brands, Lovells Auto Body Centres, in Peterborough and Spalding, as well as Signs at No.1, a division that specialises in vehicle graphics and all manner of commercial signage, to support the Monarch Automotive brand.

Monarch is offering the complete motorist solution, including MoT, service, tyres, general maintenance and windscreen repair. Along with body repair at Lovells, Monarch's service facility and flexibility of hours comes to the fore.

The workshop is open from 7.30am to 2.30am the following day, which is ideal for overnight servicing for the business user and the motorist who needs his car all day for work.

It caters for cars (11 bays), vans and light commercials (five bays) and heavy goods vehicles, including articulated lorries and trailers (five bays).

Among key customers are the 999 frontline East of England ambulances, John Lewis and DHL, among others.

Monarch is also an approved RAC Repair Network Garage.

Duncan said: "At Monarch it's not just about fleet customers, the private motorist is one of our top priorities.
