MIDWEEK action was very productive at Decoy Lakes and even in the big Saturday open some impressive weights were taken. But Sunday's cool wind saw several of the pools produce lower than expected catches.
Beastie Lake fished well for most on Saturday with John Whincup once again proving a real handful on this venue.

It was his preferred up in the water technique that saw him dominate proceedings finishing well clear of the opposition with 127lb 12oz.

Fishing the long pole he fed heavily all day with 4ml pellet using small banded pellet on the hook.

Runner-up was Roy Wells, who caught on pellet out long with corn and meat taking some better samples in the margins late on to weigh in 83lb 3oz.

Result: 1 J. Whincup, VDE, 127lb 12oz; 2 R. Wells, Decoy, 83lb 3oz; 3 R. Edmundson, Ringer Baits, 80lb; 4 L. Marlow, Corby, 73lb 8oz.

DESPITE plenty of sunshine Sunday was not one of the best days to be out in the fens wetting a line.

Fenland Rods anglers fishing the Jay Lake at Rookery Farm, Pidley, found it tough going at times with several of the anglers failing to trouble the scalesman.

Not so Kevin Lee. He drew a peg that was sheltered and managed to put 33lb to the scales, caught close in on paste and sweetcorn.

A net of small carp taken on meat saw Tim Bates into second place with 24lb 8oz, followed by Terry Birch on a level 24lb.

AFTER the relatively poor form of the Jay Lake at Pidley the Ramsey AS anglers should have feared the worst on Magpie Lake at the same fishery.

However, it fished quite well with Kevin Peacock taking the honours with 65lb 4oz of carp taken on a pellet and paste approach from peg 33.

Runner-up on peg 13 was Andrew Kilby. He fished the margins on paste to record a level 43lb.

Roger Gowler came third with 31lb 4oz, a net of carp that fell to a pole and pellet approach.

AFTER a year or so out of the local club scene, matchman Pete Whitwell has reformed the Black Bull Angling Club based in Whittlesey and already he has an impressive list of local anglers back on board.

Their first match of the year was on the in-form East Delph Lakes which saw Terry Mott well out in front with a net of carp taken in the margins on maggot and cat meat weighing 64lb 2oz.

Runner-up with 46lb 2oz was Gary Cranwell followed by Pete Whitwell with a level 34lb.

FIELDS End Fishery will be starting their popular Thursday evening opens this week with the draw at 5.45pm.

I am hoping to get across to fish one or two of these matches. I fished a few last year and looking at recent form they could be cracking events.

IF you are looking for a match to fish this weekend why not try the open event on Greenfield's Lake at Sawtry.

The match takes place on Sunday and the draw is at 11am and fishing is from noon until 4pm. Tickets are £5 with optional pools on the day.
