Prospects much better this weekend

OVER the past week we have seen a steady improvement in sport and I am expecting to see that form reflected on both pleasure and match weights over the weekend.
Unfortunately the River Nene is running clear and with little prospect of heavy rain a clear river will greet you.
I would suggest you go easy on the groundbaiting, perhaps better to put four small balls in to start with as opposed to a big and bold approach.
It would be nice to think that this weekend the roach will start to show but for now skimmers and bream will be your main target.
With Railworld and Middleholme taken up with match bookings on Sunday, you will need to look a little further upstream.
Orton Downstream could be a wise choice. While cutting out pegs a week or so ago the one spot on the river that was really alive with fish topping was the "wides" from 480 through to 500. They're not the easiest of pegs to get to, or to fish for that matter, but well worth a visit. Alwalton and Water Newton could also fish well.
For those that prefer a match, Steve Goodrum will be running a Peterborough DAA event at Stibbington on Sunday. It's the one section of the river with really good early-season form with chub, skimmers, bream and the odd tench showing.
At long last Ferry Meadows is starting to produce some bream weights. There are no match bookings on either lake for Saturday, while on Sunday the whole of Gunwade is booked out for the Steel City Open.
A feeder approach looks to be the best bet for bream. Don't use a maggot feeder though, fish a cage feeder packed with worm and caster. We have had warm weather all week so there is a chance of a few bites close in to the pole or waggler.
I have had some very good reports from anglers fishing the River Welland at the Spalding end, where there are plenty of fish to be had on the pole line with maggot or pinkie over groundbait.
Our best prospects should come from the Fenland drains. Most have started really well. Bream, skimmers, tench and even a few roach have been taken from the Twenty Foot drain while Goosetree Corner and further back towards Whittlesey and Beggars Bridge are noted hot-spots.
Some big fish weights have been taken from the low numbers on Glassmoor Bank and I have a feeling Cock Bank in the 50s around Burnt House Bridge could be the pick of our waters this weekend for tench. Take plenty of worm and caster and if you have time rake your peg out.
The Old Nene at Benwick has seen tench and bream showing. It's another good water to try this weekend. It is rarely fished in the summer but right now it is in cracking form.
All our local carp waters are on top form, I do not think you can go far wrong which ever one you pick out. Slightly to the North of Peterborough Weston Lake at Peakirk is in excellent form and I hear Gerards Carp Lake is producing lots of doubles. Surface baits are working well at Kingsland, Eldernell and the big pool at Railway Lakes.
