WITH the River Nene low and clear and a hot sunny day to make matters even worse, those fishing the depleted Peterborough Nene Team Championships at the weekend found it very tough going.
It was one of the poorest results to come off the water for several years and I do not hold out much hope for the two big fixtures on the river this coming weekend.
Apart from the very important NFA Individual National Peterborough DAA are expecti
ng a really big turnout for the open match on Sunday.
Match secretary Steve Goodrum will be looking to spread the pegs along the river from Stibbington down to the Railworld section.
Most will be looking to draw the upper sections but with such a big field expected there will inevitably be a few poor areas.
Sunday's match saw the bottom end of Railworld the best pegs to draw.
In fact the top six anglers all came from here, including match winner Matt Fovargue.
The Peterborough rod made full use of a good draw putting together a net of small roach on pinkie over groundbait to record 5lb 3oz.
On the team front it was the local lads, Peterborough Blue, who took the honours with 13 points.
Result: 1 M. Fovargue, Peterborough Red, 5lb 3oz 8dr; 2 M. Baxter, Browning Hotrods White, 4lb 10oz; 3 J. Hazeldine, Browning Hotrods Red, 4lb 8oz; 4 D. Corcoran, Bourne MG, 3lb 8oz.
Teams: 1 Peterborough Red 13pts; 2 Bourne MG 15; 3 Browning Hotrods Red 18; 4 Peterborough Blue 19; 5 VDE Old Boys 22.
Sunday's match is open to all anglers. Give Steve Goodrum a call on 07749921798 to get booked in.
THE River Nene was no better for the Warmington AC lads fishing for the Club Shield at Fotheringhay.
Brian Spence came out on top with 5lb 2oz, a net of skimmers and roach taken on pinkie.
Runner up was Mel Saggers on 2lb 8oz followed by Pat Upex and Geoff Wells with a level 2lb.
HIGHER upstream the Oundle Cole Cup club match saw the Cunnington family scoop the first three positions topped by Ron with a tench weighing in 5lb 15oz.
Second place went to Malc on 5lb 9oz followed by Troy with 4lb 5oz.
AN outing to Wansford for the Yaxley, Farcet, Holme and DAC saw big chub hooked and lost, but a couple were landed.
John Furnell fished caster on both stick float and pole to put 6lb 11½ oz in his net.
Roach and dace added to a 4lb chub saw Furnell well clear of second place. Two lost chub made up his mind to stick with caster for the match.
Ivan Marriott fished bronze maggot and waggler and also lost a big chub. But he did manage to put 5lb 1oz of roach, dace, gudgeon and a 3lb chub on the scales.
Third place went to Frank Bevilacqua also fishing bronze maggot and pole, catching 3lb 8oz of roach and dace.
