Nene should start to get very busy

THERE will be quite a lot more activity on the River Nene over the next few weeks as anglers and teams prepare for the forthcoming Angling Times Team Championship event.
On Sunday it's the Nene Team Championships which will be fished on the lower end of the river I have been led to believe.
A good flush through and a tinge of colour should see the water perform well, with roach, skimmers, perch and perhaps the odd bonus chub or bream showing.
Further upstream I see Water Newton is booked out. I am not surprised as this section of the river along with Stibbington and Wansford has been very consistent this season.
Further downstream below the city embankment expect to see quite a few anglers practicing for the NFA Individual National.
The event draws anglers from all over the country to the city centre. Let's hope the water fishes well and even more big events are fished on our river.
The actual match takes place next Saturday, September 27, and we are still looking for a couple of senior stewards to help with the general running of the event. If you fancy it give me a call on 01733 565159 for further details.
Pleasure anglers wanting to fish the Nene could do worse than try the North Bank. A few bream were taken recently on a groundbait feeder approach, with the hot pegs in the 280s and low 300s.
Fields End Bridge has been in good form with plenty of bites to pinkie or maggot and it's much the same on the Briggate and Bower in Whittlesey.
Raveley Drain has run into form and as we head into the cooler months it should get even better.
The Forty Foot Drain at the top end in the Narrows is well worth a try for skimmers, roach and tench, but for the bigger fish it has to be a chopped worm and caster approach.
The Old Nene at Benwick has already started to fish really well and should get even better over the next few months. It's a noted winter venue, full of roach, tench, perch and pike, something for everyone really. Now that platforms have been put in place along the whole section it is going to be busy.
Stillwaters will be on the change anytime now. Already the mornings and evenings are cool which will stop the fish coming up in the water to feed so regularly. Pellet and paste has been effective and still will be but expect sweetcorn, caster, worm and maggot to score well on many of our local waters.
As the days cool off, pike anglers will be eager to see the first frosts. That's the time of year that the bigger samples start to show. Once again there have been plenty of small fish about willing to take lures and spinners but bigger baits are often needed to tempt larges specimens.
