ONCE again the River Nene confounded the critics, producing some very consistent sport for all those that took part in round three of the Nene Sumer League.
I have the feeling it has almost become fashionable to knock the River Nene right now, which is a shame as it is nowhere near as bad as some would have us believe.
Yes there are a few long walks, but river access in this area has never been that good and yes there is a massive weed problem on the river in some areas, but with a little raking a clear patch can be found.
Top rod was Dave Thornton. The Wades Match Group-backed rod drew at Water Newton and took a net of skimmers for 12lb 10oz.
Runner-up was Jon Means who found a bonus tench and together with skimmers and roach weighed in 11lb 10oz. Third place went to Paul Spriggs with 11lb 10oz.
Sensas Mark One again dominated the team event taking first place on the day and with just one match to go can't be caught.
Teams: 1 Sensas Mark One 10pts; 2 Wades MG 11; 3 Peterborough A 12; 4 Peterborough B 17.
League: 1 Sensas Mark One 3pts; jt 2 Wades MG and Peterborough B both 7; 4 Peterborough A 10.
ONCE again it was a battle of the giants in the JVAC match on the Six Islands Pool at Decoy.
For once it was Martin Freeman that had the upper hand on brother Steve.
Martin drew peg 17 and fished a pole and pellet approach up in the water to record a match-winning 119lb 14oz.
Steve pushed him hard for most of the match. From peg 24 he caught small fish early in the match then really picked the pace up in the latter stages finishing just short with 102lb 15oz. Third place went to Noel Wright on peg 11 with 86lb 6oz.
ALSO at Decoy lakes last weekend were the Deeping St James club. They were on the Beastie Lake which saw Mick Wright out in front with 59lb 3oz.
Fishing meat close in on peg 23 the Deeping rod took carp and bream to edge out runner-up Jim Ayres, who put 57lb 8oz to the scales followed by George Bates on 54lb 10oz.
BIG bream are still being taken on the Fotheringhay section of the River Nene.
The Warmington club anglers saw several fish taken with Jason Vetnalls taking first place and the JH Jibb Trophy for his 20lb 15oz winning catch all taken on a swim feeder with red maggot.
Brian Sanders took two big bream to weigh in 8lb 8oz followed by Geoff Wells with 6lb 4oz.
ONE of Peterborough's newest angling clubs tried their luck last weekend on the small carp lake at Kingsland.
In near perfect conditions the lake fished well with Mick Sidney taking the honours with a fine 58lb 2oz net of carp. Sidney caught on float fished sweetcorn with his biggest fish going to the scales at 15lb 2oz.
Second was Steve Smith, who opted for a worm approach in the margins to finish on 40lb, followed by Dirk Sansby who weighed in 35lb 10oz.
At just over the halfway stage in the club's first ever Summer League Mick Sidney is the man to beat as he tops the leader board with 40 points.
