Make the most of a River Nene in top condition

THIS weekend should see some excellent catches from the River Nene around the city as thankfully we still see colour and flow.
Make the most of it though as these conditions have not been a feature of our water regularly over the past 12 months.
There is hardly a single peg booked from Peterborough right through to Oundle so you have the pick of the pegs.
Skimmers and bream are likely to show on the embankment, which is free water. You could well catch on the long pole line but a better option will be a groundbait swimfeeder.
From Railworld back up to the locks at Orton, I would opt for a pole and groundbait approach with red maggot or worm on the hook. Further upstream the likes of Water Newton, Stibbington and Wansford have been very consistent this season and should produce plenty of bites.
Oundle waters host a big match on Sunday. The Ashton section is included, but some of the other sections I have not fished for a very long time so it will be interesting to see what the venue produces.
With a tinge of colour going through the fen drains you should be in for some fine late autumn action this weekend.
Raveley Drain has run into form with both roach and tench showing in the hot pegs between the bridge and sluice. I would consider plenty of groundbait on a close-in line for roach and chopped worm and caster for tench fished down the middle.
Ramsey waters have seen some fine sport recently and if there is still colour at Factory Bank then get down there now and give it a try.
Ideal conditions should see double-figure nets of roach together with a few bream, tench and big perch.
The top end of the Forty Foot has fished well, the Twenty Foot at Beggars Bridge has seen mixed bags to 8lb and a real hot spot for pleasure anglers right now are the pegs behind the warehouses at Whittlesey. The club officials have spent a lot of time and hard work clearing pegs and its paid off with some cracking sport.
Stillwaters are just about in the change now. There will still be occasions where up in the water tactics work well, but pellet, corn and meat fished on the deck could well start to dominate any time now.
Feeder tactics have worked really well at Gerards, Weston Lake and also on the Beastie Pool at Decoy Lakes. Northey Park has produced some big fish action from the Rio Pool, while at Eldernell the margins and the hot pegs opposite the island have fished well to luncheon meat.
For some double-figure carp, Railway Lakes or Kingsland are well worth a visit or if you are up for a real challenge give Bluebell Lakes at Tansor a try. It's not an easy water but you are never far away from a 30lb plus carp.
