It should be a good Bank Holiday weekend on the river

THE Bank Holiday weekend is usually a fairly quiet time on the match fishing scene but this year new Peterborough DAA match secretary Steve Goodrum has decided to run a couple of open matches.
They were to be on the lakes at Ferry Meadows but a lack of response for the venue has seen him pick the upper Nene.
He has already got quite a few anglers in the mix and should get a good attendance for both.
Draw for the first match will be at Stibbington diner at 8am. Give him a call on 07749 921798 for all the details.
The Oundle club will also be busy over the weekend. They will be running the Phil Deacon Memorial Match on the River Nene on Monday. Get in touch with Malc Cunnington for this one on 07786 788220.
It should be a good time for those on the river this weekend. Once again we have had midweek rain so there should at the very least be flow if not a tinge of colour.
One or two anglers have been reporting roach weights on hemp and tares so it must surely not be long before the whole river starts producing roach nets.
One water that is a real hotspot right now is the North Level Drain, where roach, skimmers, tench and bream are all to be found. It looks to be the ideal water for a day's pleasure fishing, so get over and give it a try.
All you will need is a few pinkies, a bag of ground bait and some red maggots. It would seem the more bait you put at them the better the response.
For those after tench, the likes of Glassmoor Bank, above Ponders Bridge at the Carrot Wash and Cock Bank have all been in form with a chopped worm and caster approach.
Most of the fen drains are in form right now. In fact they seem to be the pick of our waters in the area. The Old Nene at Benwick is in cracking form and I hear some very good rudd have been taken above the by-pass bridge at March on the waggler with maggot.
Once again local stillwaters have produced some outstanding sport. Ross Lake at Pode Hole, North View Lakes at Gedney Hill, Weston Lake at Peakirk, Northey Park and of course Decoy Lakes are all worth a visit.
For those that love to fish surface baits Eldernell now challenges Kingsland as the best in the area.
The Silver Fish Pool at Kingsland has been a revelation this year and pleasure anglers are now disappointed if they do not bag 40lb-plus.
And for some bigger samples try Railway Lakes, the bigger of the two pools.
Give Tony Hudson a call on 01733 203428 if you would like to book in for a hectic over night session.
