IT is never plain sailing on the Twenty Foot Drain at Goosetree Corner in sunny and windy conditions and without any water movement even small fish are hard to come by as the Whittlesey AC members found out last weekend.
Winner John Hudson was the only angler to find a decent tench which gave him the edge with 6lb 5oz.

Runner-up with a net of small fish was Frank Bevilacqua on 3lb 6oz followed by Mark Chesters on 1lb 14oz.

Anglers fishing these Saturday match
es should note that this weekend's venue has been changed to Whittlesey Dyke.

THE Jay Lake at Rookery Farm Fishery was not as productive as it has been in recent weeks. Gone were the net-busting bags of carp to be replaced by more modest returns in the Allsorts AC event last weekend.

Lee Covell made the best of the conditions putting a level 32lb to the scales, a net of small carp taken on pellet and paste fished close in. Danny Stones came second with 28lb and he caught all his fish on red maggot. Third was Pete Molesworth Senior who fished worm for 27lb 2oz.

This was also the Summer League Knockout Cup semi-final with Lee Covell and Paul Dotchin going through to the final.

I am sure most of the senior match anglers in the area will be saddened to hear that Oundle stalwart Don Laxton passed away last week after a long illness. He was without doubt the backbone of both the Oundle and Cotterstock clubs and did a huge amount of work running big matches and behind the scenes managing the club's affairs.

THIS weekend sees the Division One National, yet like many other nationals the attraction for many seems to have worn off.

The match is fished down south on the River Huntspill and King Sedgemoor Drain but most of our local sides have not put a team in or will just be putting in an appearance with no practice at all. There used to be five leagues, I wonder how long it will be before there is only two?
