Don't be put off by the wet weather

WE have had quite a lot of wet weather recently and with even more in prospect over the weekend I am sure it's going to put a few anglers off venturing out over the next few days.
But you could well be missing out on some of the best action from our local rivers and drains since the start of the season.
If we do at last get colour and flow expect bumper nets of skimmers, bream and roach. They will undoubtedly feed throughout the river, and although you may have to fish feeders or at the very least big heavy pole floats to present a decent bait but it will be worth it.
The old problem could be the high winds that very often accompany wet weather at this time of year.
With very few matches on locally the River Nene looks a good bet especially on the sections well above Peterborough. Wansford, Stibbington, Water Newton, and even Milton should produce, while the likes of River Lane down to the town bridge could well see big bream weights.
Although our Fen Drains have fished fairly well so far this season they too will benefit from a good flush through.
Bream and tench should be on the feed, a small feeder approach or better still chopped worm and caster on the pole should be very effective on the likes of the Twenty Foot and Forty Foot Drains. Glassmoor will improve dramatically with some colour as will Butlers Mill and Cock Bank.
The North Level Drain is well worth a visit. It really has been one of the picks of the local venues so far this season. There should be consistent sport too from the South Holland Main Drain.
It will be interesting to see if the extra water around affects some of the stillwaters in the area. It should be business as usual on the Decoy Lakes complex, although those fishing light rigs up in the water with pellet may well have to think about a change of tactics to perhaps paste, meat or the old faithful sweetcorn and hemp seed approach.
Railway Lakes at Whittlesey has seen a lot of doubles coming out of the big lake and at Kingsland Reservoir anglers have reported both of the carp lakes in cracking form with a small Method feeder working well.
Northey Park has been consistent, while at Eldernell a few fish are still falling to baits fished off the top.
A little further afield Rookery Farm Fishery at Pidley will give you a good day's pleasure fishing. It's an ideal water for those anglers just getting used to fishing a pole as you do not have to fish out too long to get among the fish.
I did notice a change in temperature in the early mornings this week. I am sure pike anglers will have noticed it too and over the next few weeks pike and zander fishing will really take off. The arrival of cooler weather seems to bring the big fish onto the feed.
