CITY angler Jonathan Taylor has been picked to fish for his country.
Following weekend England Youth trials at the well known Barston Fishery, Taylor was included in the England Under 22 side to compete in the World Youth Championships in Ghent, Belgium, on July 26 and 27.

The Sensas Mark One angler has already fished for his country and is expected to make a good showing on a venue that should suit his style.

THERE were some really big fish taken off the River Nene during the first week of the season topped by Steve Teeson who took a massive 15lb 4oz barbel.

Fishing a big hair rigged pellet over a bed of pellet and hemp on the river above Wansford he caught the huge fish before first light on Sunday morning.

ASHTON high bank was the venue for Oundle AS members fishing the Opening Shield match which saw Mark Cunnington take first place with four tench and small fish taken on red maggot and pinkie to record 14lb 14oz.

Runner-up Joe Brudenell put 10lb 11oz to the scales which included a 6lb 6oz tench, all taken on worm. Malc Cunnington took third place with an all roach catch for 5lb.

Sunday saw the members fish the Branfoot Cup from Handgate to Black Bridge, where high winds hampered sport.

Roger Lee fished pole and pinkie to claim first place with 5lb 10oz followed by Alan Smith (4lb 8oz) and Troy Cunnington junior (1lb 12oz).

THE first round of the Kings of the Fens was knocked off course due to the high winds sweeping across the fens and weights were much lower than had been predicted on the North Level Drain.

Match-winner Andrew Page was the only angler to break into double figures. The MAP Peterborough-backed rod relied on a waggler and maggot approach to take a bream, a decent tench and a few smaller samples to weigh in 10lb 2oz.

Result: 1 A. Page, MAP Peterborough, 10lb 2oz; 2 K. Jerrom, Browning Hotrods White, 8lb 12oz; 3 M. Dixon, Bourne A, 7lb 7oz; 4 R. Woodward, Mark One Black, 7lb 3oz; 5 H. Schumann, FM Stanjay, 7lb 1oz.

Teams: 1 Sensas Mark One Black 21pts; 2 FM Stanjay 27; 3 Van den Eynde 28; 4 Browning Hotrods Red 30.

THE North Bank of the River Nene produced one of its worst match results I can ever remember at the weekend. In fact, there was nothing to gain for the teams fishing the Team Championship final in a couple of weeks time as a howling downstream wind prevented all but a few fishing a long pole line.

Most relied on fishing the margins or a small feeder to attract a few small samples.

Way out in front with three bream taken on the tip was Saints rod Jimmy Hines. He drew in the 70s and weighed in 7lb 8oz.

Result: 1 J. Hines, Saints, 7lb 8oz; 2 L. Kerry, Maver Barnsley, 1lb 14oz; 3 P. Hughes, Saints, 1lb 13oz; 4 N. Faulkner, Chester Tackle Locker, 1lb 11oz.

IT would seem that the upper sections above Peterborough were no better and in the Deeping St James club match several anglers failed to trouble the scalesman.
