Angling: Good effort bythe March men

IN last weekend's Division Three National on the Staffs and Worcester Canal, March and District AA put in a reasonable team card, more than holding their own on a venue which is alien to our tactics in this part of the world.
To be fair, the canal fished well with plenty of small fish showing throughout the match length.
The team came a respectable 12th out of 38 teams with Barry Wiggington the pick of the bunch finishing 20th overall from peg E2 putting 2.92kg to the scales.
On the subject of nationals I wonder how much longer they will carry on. I can see only two divisions being fished within the next couple of years. Perhaps now is the time to have regional semi-finals with less travelling and fishing on venues known to all teams. Then fish a one-off grand final between say 50 of the top teams from around the country.
WISBECH match group Sensas Mark One are putting up a strong challenge in the Drennan Super League.
Round Two was fished at Lakeview Fishery last Saturday and our local lads did well to come in joint second and are now just a point behind the league leaders.
At the halfway stage Daiwa Trentmen hold pole position. Surprisingly Maver Barnsley have yet to show any form and they are now plumb last.
This match saw Dean Guess take the individual honours from Canal 17. Feeding heavily with maggot on the long pole line he caught steadily all day to record 102lb 5oz.
Runner-up was Leicester Sensas' new signing Paul Yates with 100lb 8oz from Lagoon 3. His points helped Leicester Sensas to a match win on the day.
Result:
1 D. Guess, Daiwa Trentmen, 102lb 5oz; 2 P. Yates, Leic Sensas, 100lb 8oz; 3 M. Godfrey, Daiwa Trentmen, 82lb 4oz; 4 N. Machin, Sensas Mark One, 82lb; 5 S. Piecha, Leic Sensas, 80lb 10oz.
Teams: 1 Leic Sensas 22 pts; jt 2 Sensas Mark One and Daiwa Trentmen, both 24; 4 Maver Barnsley 30.
League: 1 Daiwa Trentmen 45 pts; 2 Sensas Mark One 46; 3 Leic Sensas 52; 4 Maver Barnsley 57.
I must say that I had my doubts as to whether the North Level Drain would hold up to yet another big match but in the final round of the new King of the Fens League the drain produced some consistent sport, with only the odd patchy area.
There were no major shocks on the team front. On the day it was Browning Hotrods that stole the show with an excellent 17-point scorecard.
However, a consistent VDE side came second and that runners-up spot edged out Bourne Match Group for the league title by just one point.
Mike Whittaker was top individual on the day with 28lb 12oz. Fishing for Bourne, Whittaker put together a net of bream and skimmers on the tip from peg 19 on the rushes catching steadily all day.
Result:
1 M. Whittaker, Bourne MG, 28lb 12oz; 2 A. Lemmon, Sensas Mark One White, 15lb 7oz; 3 B. Harding, Bourne MG, 13lb 11oz; 4 N. Miller, Browning Hotrods Red, 11lb 10oz; 5 M. Pollard, Fox Match Stanjay, 11lb 9oz.
Teams: 1 Browning Hotrods Red 17pts; 2 VDE 25; 3 Sensas Mark One White 26; jt 4 Fox Match Stanjay and Browning Hotrods White both 28.
League: 1 VDE 16pts; 2 Bourne MG 17; 3 Fox Match Stanjay 19; 4 Browning Hotrods Red 20; 5 Wades MG 28.
Top individual: Hans Schumann 17pts.
