I would like to think this weekend will be a special one for anglers visiting our local waters but I am sorry to say that unless conditions improve dramatically those fishing the two big matches on the River Nene are going to be very disappointed.
Tomorrow anglers from all over the country will be heading this way for the NFA Individual National, run for the top two anglers in their team that fished a national team event this year.
The match will be fished on the Middleholme section and the
n along the low numbers of the North Bank. Usually you would expect to see some good nets of bream leading the way with the rest of the field taking nets of skimmers, roach, perch and eels.
However conditions will dictate the outcome this year with possibly only three bream needed to win it. I really hope I am proved wrong as Peterborough DAA have put a lot of time and effort into this match and indeed Sunday's big match as well.
That will be fished on the upper river sections through to Railworld and I expect to see an improvement after last weekend's poor event. With the likes of Stibbington and Water Newton in this time some much better action is expected.
Sunday, and indeed the following Sunday, are days to avoid the River Nene for pleasure anglers. Both weekends will see most sections from Stibbington to Railworld being used.
As usual, the fenland drains and local stillwaters have been consistent producers of fish over recent weeks. The Forty Foot in particular is well worth a visit, with the narrows at the top end close to the Forty Foot Bridge a real hot spot right now.
A caster and chopped worm approach should see you into tench, bream and skimmers and there are some very big perch on the go too.
On the Twenty Foot Drain the best pegs look to be at Beggars Bridge, while on Raveley Drain tench have been taken either side of the sluice gates. The North Level Drain rarely fails to produce and the South Holland Drain is another banker for bites.
Onto stillwaters now, you will not go far wrong at Decoy Lakes on just about any pool, pellet and paste, corn, meat and now caster and maggot will all take fish.
Weston's Lake at Peakirk is a favourite for pleasure anglers at the moment and Northey Park has seen big fish action on the Rio Pool. Kingsland Lakes are fishing well in the margins and at Eldernell and Railway Lakes fish can still be had off the top.
Pike anglers have not found the bigger specimens yet, but over the next few weeks you can expect sport to improve.
Lure fishing has become popular over the past couple of years and anglers prepared to move around have had good sport on the River Nene and several fen drains. No big fish but fighting fit pike to 8lb have been taken.
