For Local Newspaper Week 2008, we take you behind the scenes at your local newspaper.
Mark Edwards has been in charge of the ET for just over a year after editing the Northampton Chronicle and Echo for 11 years.
He was made editor of the Bedfordshire
Times at the tender age of 28, and, in his time, has done freelance shifts for most of the national tabloids, including the Sun- day Sport, where he ghost-wrote a column for Bobby Moore.
He decides what st
ories we run with, how we develop them and where they go in the paper. He is also in charge of all editorial staff, and is the public face of the newspaper.
His typical working day runs from 7am until 7pm, during which
he will take morning and afternoon conference to dis- cuss the news, sport, features and photo- graphic content of the paper, liaise with sales and advertising staff and, when he's got time, will often be found subbing pages as well.
He said: "I've got the best job in the world. No one has ever got all the resources to do everything they would like to, but we do everything we can to put a paper out that the people of Peter- borough can be proud of.
"You get to meet some fascinating people, report on the things that really matter to local communities, and, at times, really make a difference to people's lives."
Deputy editor Nigel Thornton is well known to readers for his column, Thornton on Thursday, and many of you will know assistant editor Alex Gordon, who has been with the paper since 1971.
Alex gave TV presenter Penny Smith her first journalistic break as a reporter on
The ET, after being impressed by an essay she wrote describing a summer she spent picking peaches overseas.
He also gave the producer of the Oscar-winning Britflick, Andy Harries, a work experience placement when he left school, followed by a job as a reporter.
Andy left The ET to work in telly, where he rose to become the head of ITV drama.
He's never forgotten us, though, and even rang us a report through from the Academy Awards' red carpet.
